Synopsis

Soldier
After scripting Blade Runner and Twelve Monkeys, David Webb Peoples continued to traverse the science fiction landscape with this action-adventure directed by Paul Anderson. A prologue shows infants classified 1A and placed in an academy promoting violent militarism. Spawned in such an environment, Sgt. Todd (Kurt Russell) became a top-ranking interplanetary fighter. However, military upgrades in genetic engineering made Todd obsolete. Todd's commanding officer, Captain Church (Gary Busey), has a confrontation with West Point-trained Colonel Mekum (Jason Isaacs), who heads the new generation of genetically engineered fighters. One such warrior is Caine 607 (Jason Scott Lee), who defeats Todd and others led by Church. The trio, presumed dead, is put in a garbage ship which dumps them on the distant Arcadia 234 planet. However, Todd survives and is nursed by homesteaders Sandra (Connie Nielsen) and Mace (Sean Pertwee), while their mute son Nathan (brothers Jared and Taylor Thorne) watches. Todd is regarded with suspicion by others in the colony. But when the warrior supermen, led by Caine 607, attack the settlement, Todd turns out to be their only line of defense. The one-man army springs into action to eliminate the super squadron amid leftover props from Demolition Man, Event Horizon and other sci-fi movies. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

I watched the movie first when I was a teenager. Love the futuristic setting, love the fighting, and of course love the humanistic touch. Now watching it again on bluray, the story still has me. Not to mention that they have done a pretty good job transferring the movie into high definition. I also like the sound effects a lot, reaching out from the speaker and engulfing, whether it's the sound of the wind blowing or giagantic machinery moving or the input sound of the electronic control panels, all crisp and clear. My only gripe is that they didn't built an all-convincing set for filming the movie(I mean particularly the base where the refugees hide). Perhaps they did't have that much budget to build or perhaps Paul Anderson just did not have a lot of influence in the business back then and were not big enough to make requests like that.

I don't think this movie was ever given it's far due. It was a really interest, crisp future setting with a very poignent and meaningful story. Where there super soldiers and space ships, yes and if that's not your bag maybe it turned you away from this movie. But it's about what makes a person, a person and the triumph of the human spirit and Kurt Russell gives probably one of the best performances of his entire career. It's more than worth buying, especially at 6 dollars.

    A Very, Very Good Film

Kurt Russell gives one of the best performances of his career in this top-notch yet underrated action film. This is a movie whose box-office run was undercut by a poor movie trailer and very little marketing, but could have been a big hit. Very good dvd release here, with a nice widescreen transfer and audio commentary track.

Dirty Harry meets outer space in this super crazy awesome underappreciated film. Kurt Russell kicks butt and displays one of his best roles in this action packed story about a super soldier trained from birth that soon finds that like any piece of equipment, he can become obsolete.

A must see for Kurt Russell fans. A soldier trained to live without expressing any human emotions, is cast aside by those he served well, and discovers caring by his exposure to civillians on another world.
