      xbr55x900e

I purchased xbr55x900e 11/25/17. I purchased xbr65x900c Sept 2015 and before this xbr49. There are many positives to this brand despite my long negative below and that's why 3 stars. These TV's have GREAT pic quality, easy of use smart apps and are very easy to set up. The extra expense is worth the pic quality. Unfortunately the WiFi connection is very poor. Over the last two years constant problems with periodic/random loss of smart TV's WiFi connection to router/internet. When downloading movies (VUDU and Netflix) periodic/random interruptions/buffering (66Mbps speed on my system). I have spoken with "Sony tech help" and it has not been helpful (reset router, reset TV, updated/current sony TV software for TV system, power on/off both router/TV, gone to manual WiFi settings, changed DNS, etc...only transient success... Yes, I have read and re-read the SONY tech "guideline link" for when you have this problem [3 times it is very very long] and it has not corrected problem!!!!) ...I have done it ALL. In last 6 mos I have EERO system which has confirmed my suspicion. EERO system has allowed me to prove that it is not me, my house, my WiFi range, etc .... but rather the SONY TV's. I can now monitor my network real time. Where as my DirecTV set top box, Wii, Playstation, Samsung TV, 2 iPhones, and 3 iPads have a constant 5 bar signal with constant 66 Mbps speed checks; you can watch the xbr55 and xbr65 randomly drop signal strength. During these periods you can ChromeCast from my iPhone to the "buffering" TV from the DirecTV/ESPN/Netflix app on iPhone. When you go to the SONY website and enter "WiFi connection problem" or "connection problem with sony bravia tv" there is a string of this complaint going back to 2014. Let me reemphasize that the link guide provided by SONY doesn't solve problem, neither are the sony tech able to help. At the end of the problem you can try to get new TV or hardwire TV to router (obviously far suboptimal solutions). I write this detailed complaint here because I have received no satisfactory solution from SONY with multiple attempts; but I did notice that SONY appears to monitor this space and respond. I assume the wider audience here might cause them to re-think the standard response of.... "Thank you for your comment. We value your business, and want all our customers to be happy. We hope the following "link" will help you with your problem. If not please re-contact at blah blah blah blah". Maybe SONY might acknowledge the problem that is well represented on their own bulletin board and admit the problem is with "their WiFi connection" equipment in the TV. Did I mention the Samsung TV and other devices have not had one single problem over this same 2-3 year period while the 3 SONY products have.

      Amazing Display

I received my TV on June 29th. No problems with delivery. The Box was perfect … The TV had no scratches, no marks or dead pixels. Mounting the TV to the wall, Updating the TV, Login In to my Android account, calibrating colors and testing it out took about an hour and a half more or less. The Picture is amazing! I’ve already played a few Netflix Movies, You Tube videos, and Played Xbox on it. I have to say this took everything I threw at it in three days very well. There are just a few little hiccups with the TV. The response time from remote to TV can sometimes get laggy. The volume sometimes either doesn’t work right away, or it is delayed. When the TV is hooked up to the internet it sometimes has to be reconnected again. When watching Netflix on the built in app. If you by accident hit one of the buttons on the remote… say INPUT .. the tv starts to stutter. I also notice that if you are watching a movie with subtitles the blacks in the show/movie turn grey. It’s noticeable while you are watching TV during the night. Also there is some light bleeding on the bottom corners of the TV. Again not to noticeable unless there is a night scene. I am sure that there are other features on this tv that I have not access yet. I only wish that there was a place where I can find the right calibration and also a place to find out all the features of my tv has to offer. Other than that I am happy with my purchase. I should’ve done a little bit more research and find a tv that didn’t have the little annoying things that I’ve discovered with my tv. I am pretty happy and I just hope that the TV has a long life.

This is an excellent TV. Among it's stand-out features is that it has an "old fashioned" headphone jack, unlike most other "modern" TV brands, that only offer a digital-out jack. Which means I don't have to replace my legacy amp in order to use my existing external speakers or my wireless headphones. The picture quality has improved substantially over the four year old Sony TV that this one replaces (I gave my old 46" TV to a friend; it was a real upgrade for her). I have not yet tried any 4K content. No doubt I will some day, when it becomes more widely available. In the meantime, it upscales the regular HD TV signal well enough. I can see few, if any, artifacts—which is something I was concerned about. The management interface is radically changed from my previous model. I haven't used it enough to fairly say whether it's an improvement or not. Each time you have to learn the lingo to find what you're looking for. That's the case for most new tech. I'm reasonably savvy, but the interface on my old TV and on this one is a challenge for anyone with little technical expertise. Fortunately I had my old TV set up pretty well so my friend had to do little to get it working for her (she had to get her DVD player to work and her Roku device; there were several extraneous cables from her old set that confused the matter a bit). Unlike my old TV the power-on switch is inconveniently located on the back of the set. So I have to use the remote to turn it on; this is no real hardship; I just have to change my habits a bit. Fortunately it responds to my Comcast cable remote so that I don't have to juggle devices to turn it on. Also, the TV was well adjusted right out of the box so that, as I strolled through the settings, I had to make few changes. In fact, if you're not the curious type, you can use this TV with nothing more the the "on" button of the remote control that comes with the TV. With the few caveats I mentioned, this TV meets my expectations. Sony is still my go-to brand. I've had one Sony TV or another for the last 30 years.

Not Worth $1,000, poor picture, slow Smart feature

I went to BB to buy the Samsung MU8000, but the Best Buy home theater staff talked me into this Sony TV X800 b/c its "better quality w/ faster processor". The Sony demo video showed bright, crisp, deeply colored images and it was cheaper on sale so I bought it. MISTAKE. I spent the past week trying to adjust the settings for a decent picture, but I'm going to return it. The annoyances that this $1000 TV creates are worse than the serious pain in the a$$ that it's going to be to return this. Cons: 1.. Dark scenes look TERRIBLE, especially in low light rooms. Either everything is all black and you can't see any detail, or everything varying shades of gray with no black. The TV frame is also black which highlights how 'gray' the on-screen blacks really are. The reviews online mention this, but I didn't think it would bother me as much as it does. GoT looks awful as do all the crime shows, movies, and netflix/hulu shows I watch. I was watching a show on our 7-year old Samsung, and when I switched to watch the rest of it on the Sony, the difference was really noticeable and annoying. 2. Samsung sound bar blocks the remote sensor on the TV. I have to lift my arm above shoulder height to get the remote to work, which is annoying b/c the TV's reaction time is so slow. I have to hold it up there waiting to see if I have to push the button again or not. 3. Remote is cheap and feels way low quality. X1 remote is better. Batteries were almost drained when i opened them 4. TV is slow to process remote commands and just laggy. You have to hit 'Home' and wait 4 seconds before the smart features open. 5. Watching Netflix (4k) makes the picture get all distorted and hiccup-y after a while rendering it unwatchable. I have to shut it, and reopen which doesn't always fix it. It happened 5 times to me last night so I just gave up and watched via a different method. 6. Apps hang and you have to clear the cache to get them to work Pros: 1. Easy set up 2. Looks nice 3. Many pre-installed apps 4. Android TV is really cool. The TV's UI is really awesome too. 5. Shows the real-time video quality (240 to 720 to 2160) It's really neat to watch the quality change. 6. Plenty of picture quality adjustments (though none solve the inherent picture issue),

I have been using Sony products for many years and just can not believe the problems that we had had with this TV and tech support. This is an Android TV. I really did not think much about it until it crashed. The problem is that if the Android software crashes, as we all know it will, the TV is worthless. You can not bypass the software and use the TV with your cable box, DVD, or any other device. While trying to get this taken care of with Sony Tech Support, which has always been one of the best, they determined that it needed to be replace. The told me the process that I needed to email pics, case number and serial number to the company that would bring a replacement to the house. The service company is now saying that the screen is damaged and they will not replace it. There is no damage to the screen. This TV is less then 2 weeks old. It will be returned to Best Buy next week

      Poor Handling of HDR Content

      Posted

I was in the market for a 4k HDR TV and chose this one based on the viewing angles (most have poor viewing angles). I was very satisfied with this aspect of the TV. Sports and regular HD 1080p via cable box was excellent from any angle. I also watched a blu-ray on the TV and was satisfied. But then I tried out the HDR capabilities. I viewed an episode of Daredevil on Netflix, and things were going ok until there was a dark scene. All the blacks appeared as a fuzzy, grey haze. I thought at first I was just tired, and rubbed my eyes several times. I tried adjusting the picture settings, and the Cinema Pro setting helped a little, but not enough. I read some expert reviews online and they stated that this TV is unable to handle dark scenes, and boy are they right. It's so distracting that it makes HDR content unwatchable. If HDR viewing doesn't matter, you're better off buying a regular HD TV for half the price. I'm just going to open my wallet and get an LG OLED instead.

Although this is not quite as nice as the 900E version (with FALD), this set produces a very nice picture and is quite nice to watch. Depending on when you buy, and whether the sales are really strong or not, moving up to the 900E may be in your budget. If it is, I absolutely recommend doing so. But, if the 900E is a little more than your wallet can handle, you won't be disappointed in the 800E. If you put the sets side-by-side and put them through their paces, you will see some subtle improvements with the 900E. But, if you can't run them side-by-side, you really won't see the difference. The set does an excellent job at upscaling content and does a very good job of rendering DVD's or BluRay movies with an excellent picture. Streaming content is excellent overall and your satellite or cable content will look nice as well. The single biggest recommendation I have for your input signals is to let them send the signal in native format if at all possible and let the TV do the upscaling. Allow your satellite and cable boxes to send in the original format and don't allow/force them to upscale to 1080 (1080 should NOT be the only output quality selected in your box).

I was a bit skeptical about this t.v. performing up to the standards I have come to know over the past few years buying a little higher end Sony T.V.'s with better Specs. meaning (higher refresh rates at 120 to 240hz.) and motion rates at 960. However, this still is one of Sony's XBR models so decided to give it a try and I have to say the colors are vibrant, greens, blues, and reds stand out nicely watching in 4k or even in 1080p. no flicker to the image very nice quality comparable to the higher end models with better specs. The motion on this television had me worried about blurriness during sports being only 240 but this television holds up nicely to the other Sony 4k t.v I bought in 2015 the Xbr 55x850c which has a motion rate of 960 no discernable difference between the two. This model also has a lot deeper black levels than expected which is nice, not quite the inky tone you get with Oled of course but better than you will find from most in this class and the HDR I have used while playing on the PS4 Pro really adds a more lifelike color pallet to anything utilizing it. Lastly, the build and overall look of the T.V. is very nice quality, controller easy to use and set-up to work with a cable box for a one controller set-up works with a PS4 nicely also. Great buy for this price range.
