      Extraordinary resolution; slow autofocus

For my photography the two characteristics most important for a lens are resolution and speed/accuracy of auto focus. My camera is the Sony A7RM2. The f2.8 GM 70-200 mm lens arrived a week ago and I subjected it to resolution tests, and compared it with several other SONY lenses, including the outstanding FE G 90 mm Macro lens. Overall the lens proved to be extremely sharp, even wide open, across its range of focal lengths and across the frame. 2 Point type and even a 0.5 point width line (located within 20% of the left and right edges of the target) are resolved at f3.5-f4 and still identifiable at f2.8. At both 70 mm and 200 mm the lens performs at its best; near 100mm it is slightly less sharp. Center resolution is extraordinary from f4 and excellent at most focal lengths, even at f2.8. At the frame corners resolution is outstanding above f3.5 and still near excellent at f2.8 except aound 100 mm focal length where it resolves somewhat less below f4. As reported by others, my first photography with this lens shows that it is not ideal for fast focusing applications. It often takes too much time to focus even in moderately good light. Avoiding the FULL focus range speeds action considerably. Color and contrast are quite good, qualitatively and bokeh is IMO excellent. I plan to add to this review after more experience with this lens and especially after I receive the 2X teleconverter. Right now I rate the lens 4 stars.

The lens looks nice at f/2.8 for static objects (portraits) but it's very difficult to work with so it has to be stopped down below f/4 to have a chance to get good focus. Bokeh isn't very good on the edges as they are oval and only round in the center. There is minimal onion effect due to the ASPH elements, which is nice. Sports are extremely difficult to shoot. Tracking focus on the A7 with this lens is almost impossible. You have to pre-focus in an area and then rapid shoot a lot of frames hoping one of them will be in focus. A7n cameras are not fast enough for that. Review of the 2x and 1.4x extenders are dismal so it doesn't even help you shoot longer if you do opt to get this to use an extender. If you have the f/4, just stick with it and ignore this upgrade as you'll just get a heavier lens with no benefits.

These other reviews are a joke from people who have no idea what this lens is. Nor are they even remotely serious photographers. This is a seriously good lens. It is fast to focus, certain, high contrast, sharp, good color saturation, great bokeh. In short, the very best lens of it's type I have ever used.

Really happy with this lens. I was concerned that I would have buyers remorse seeing how's it's a very expensive lens but I have none! I assigned Eye AF to the lens button and as of right now, that's the perfect place for it. Really happy with the images I get using this lens.

Sony out-did themselves on this one. Expensive, but not unreasonably more than Canon's equivalent, and I'd argue, much much better. I'm a giant prime advocate, but this one is soooo good.
