Prepare yourself...'SOUTH OF HEAVEN' will blow you away!! One of my top 5 bands from 30 years of Heavy Metal, Slayer will test you!! The lyrics are not only intelligent, but real. Listen closely. 'Ghosts of War' is frickin' awesome; I always picture the dead jumping out of the plane in the movie 'Heavy Metal.' 'Live Undead' is a sinister prelude to 'Behind the Crooked Cross' which moves me; at 1:57 Kerry King literally cuts in with a slashing guitar and rips the place wild. It's very hard to write this review while listening. #5 song, 'MS' will grind you into oblivion with its intense hard rockin sound! I got lost one time in Norfolk, VA, "South of Heaven" rockin'; didn't matter where I was, this music kicks AS*....The title track is no fool, starts off calmly, with a devilish tone, drums as pillars, once cranked up their is no stopping......bleeding into 'Slient Scream'.... during this 'Silent Scream' trip you may feel the URGE to rearrange your room; I have done so many times..... 'Spill the Blood' evens out this book of tales with wisdom of treachery. Add the hard paced drifted riffed 'Dissident Agressor' and FAST 'Cleanse the Soul' and you have a CD that you will NEVER EVER FORGET!!!!!!

If you are new to Slayer, "South Of Heaven" is probably the most accessible album to listen to in the Slayer catalog. When comparing this album to the extremely fast Slayer release "Reign In Blood", the contrast is in the speed and ferocity of the music. Make no mistake, "South Of Heaven" is one very heavy Thrash album, a dynamite Metal attack of relentless riffs, leads, solos and punishing bass & drumming. The opening lead and riffs of the track "South Of Heaven" is down right eerie and clears the path for an earth shaking song. This tune sets the groundwork, the tone for the rest of the album. This is one Thrash Metal album that I can never get enough of, from a Grammy winning band that helped create and originate this genre. Definitely buy "South Of Heaven", if you are into real Metal and Thrash you will have no regrets! The liner notes are 8 pages, with complete lyrics and song credits. Slayer is: Tom Araya on bass and vocals, Kerry King on lead guitar, Jeff Hanneman on lead guitar and Dave Lombardo on drums. As with other Slayer albums, the producer is Rick Rubin.

Alot of people tend to critisize this album for "not being nearlly as good as "reign in blood" or they just say that it "flat out sucks", but im here to say that this album is way better than reign in blood and it does not suck. Its not as fast as reign in blood, but that doesn't mean its not as good. It was a new step for slayer infact they took one more step in this dirction whne they did the next album "seasons in the abyss", and that was the same take, slow , as well as virtuostic (but sadly they went punk all throughout the 90s). I loved this album and i loved its sequel, "Seasons in the the abyss" as well. If you like oldschool this is not the album for you, but if you can apperciate slow music and the talent thats in it, then this is the album for you. My top 5 favorite songs on the album: 1. Behind The Crooked Cross 2. Silent Scream 3. South of Heaven 4. Manditory Suicide 5. Live Undead
