If there’s a melody and harmony to music than Roswell Six’s new CD Terra Incognita: Beyond the Horizon strikes just the right chord. Pitched as an accompaniment to Kevin J. Anderson’s latest book, The Edge of the World, the songs are musical representations of scenes from the novel. Anderson describes the music saying “Each of the 13 tracks stand alone; they are snapshots of the epic story…”. And Anderson should know. The bestselling author wrote the lyrics for Beyond the Horizon with his wife, and fellow author, Rebecca Moesta. Casting Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie to sing the part of Captain Shay and Kansas violinist David Ragsdale added even more power to an already stellar group of musicians. The tracks themselves reflect the member’s vast experience in their polished, mature sound. Two out of the 13 songs are instrumentals. Both catchy and complex they are a rare blend of rock and classical styles combining the two forms to create a progrock sound unique to Roswell Six. Not to be outdone however, vocalist Lana Lane delivers. She gives an emotional performance, portraying Edge of the World character Adrea with devastating accuracy. Overall the CD is a musical accomplishment the group should be proud of and a wonderful compliment to the novel, though it could easily stand on its own as part of any music lovers collection.

I received my copy of it a couple of weeks ago and a day hasn't gone by that I haven't listened to it at least once. My coworkers have been greatly surprised. I usually leave the louder music at home, but I haven't been able to with this CD. From the opening moments of Ishalem, straight through to the end, I've been enjoying it more and more everytime I listen to it. Author Kevin J. Anderson and his wife, Rebecca Moesta (also an author) are first time lyricists. They managed to accomplish a great deal in regards to song and story on this CD. Making the CD and the book "The Edge of the World" a well rounded achievement. "Here Be Monsters" is still my favorite song, but "The Call of the Sea" is creeping up there. Lana Lane is fantastic. I'd never listened to her much before this, but I will be tracking down more of her stuff. I think the main reason, for the two songs that I like, is the vocals of John Payne as "Captain Shay."
