    Synopsis

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!
Despite mixed reviews and a disastrous initial release that dumped the film into theaters for a week in the midst of the 1984 Summer Olympics, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eight Dimension went on to become one of the major cult films of the 1980s, developing a rabid following after its release on videotape. Drifting between satire and improbable sci-fi adventure, the film stars Peter Weller as Buckaroo Banzai, the son of an American mother and Japanese father who is a combination physicist, neurosurgeon, martial arts master, secret agent, and rock star who travels with his band of assistants/backing musicians, The Hong Kong Cavaliers. As the story opens, Buckaroo is driving his car through a mountain to test his new invention, the Oscillation Overthruster. However, a race of boorish aliens called the Red Lectroids have been waiting for such an item to become a reality, as they need it to return to the distant planet they call home. One of Buckaroo's arch-enemies, Dr. Emilio Lizardo (John Lithgow), who has been possessed by the Red Lectroids, attempted to created a similar device decades before; now escaped from an insane asylum, he is back at work with the Lectroids on a plan to control the world. Throw in Rastafarian aliens, unscheduled travel between dimensions, and the odd inexplicable watermelon, and you get a film that defies conventional synopsis. With its fast pace, quotable dialogue ("No matter where you go, there you are"), and barrage of gags (subtle and otherwise), you won't be bored even when you're not sure what's going on. The supporting cast includes Jeff Goldblum as New Jersey, a Cavalier with a snappy cowboy outfit, and Ellen Barkin as Penny Priddy, the twin sister of Buckaroo's late wife. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Ahead of its time, but now a little long in tooth

I first saw this film decades ago in one of my local movie theatres that catered to the Saturday matinee crowd. I also saw other such quirky films ,e.g., The Adventures of Remo Williams, around that time in my life. While this special edition has many extras (some of which are simply underwhelming) the real pleasure is seeing this film in a beautiful HD format. While the movie's plot is borderline nonsensical, the true joy of this film lies in it functioning as an introduction to a saga already underway, not unlike the first Star Wars movie. The plot assumes that you know about the Banzai Institute, Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems, etc. and it spends little time explaining what they are and why the main characters are the way that they are. Seeing Peter Weller, Jeff Goldblum, Ellen Barkin and John Lithgow (at his scene-chewing best) makes this film and its pseudo-science fiction plot enjoyable and a real treat. However, despite the fact that this movie is racially diverse is its casting, there are elements that paradoxically are ethnically insensitive and somewhat dated. This film, while ahead of its time, it is a little long in the tooth and its eccentricities (some endearing, some aggravating) render it more of a failed experiment more than a visionary work of art that fans of it have asserted it be. That being said, given the rise of Nerd culture and Hollywood's current deficit of new ideas, it may be time to dust off Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers and give them a second chance at making the world safe from the forces of evil. Jersey Strong indeed!

Not only do we get an amazing transfer of this cult classic but, hours of bonus features. After buying several Shout/Scream Factory Blurays I have come to the conclusion that this is a company composed of fans of the films they release. The Transfer is great as well as the sound. There are Hours of bunus features and a cool reversible cover just in case you enjoy the original artwork. This film is an acquired taste but, a blast if you don't take it too seriously just as the film it's self doesn't take it too seriously. By the end of your veiwing with a open mind you will be humming the theme song in no time. It's amazing how much of the original cast and crew they got for the documentaries and interviews for such a underground film that a lot of people don't even realize exists. This would get five stars but, I took a star off as the second disc with most of the bonus features are on a DVD versus another Bluray. It's nit picky but, I like consistency and would of liked the same resolutions on both discs. I also enjoy Blurays due to them being scratch resistant and thus a star is lost. If your a fan of this film you should own this already and if your new pick it up anyway as you will at least enjoy the theme song:)

      Great Different Movie

This is a quirky movie that is not just the same old. It boldly advertises its never to be made sequel. Too bad because this really is a great movie with some appropriately over the top performances. In some ways it was ahead of its time as it has a comic book base to the story line. Some really great lines are in it and it is a movie which is fun to watch more than once. Some of the dialogue is pretty quick and you really don't want to miss some of the clever quips. Appropriate for all although the young may find some of it a frightening. The movie generally moves at a great pace... maybe a little faster than some of the critics could handle. Above all else it was a hard sell when released since it was just not the standard rehashes that Hollywood loves. It is a sci-fi action adventure with Buckaroo as a brain surgeon / rock star / high adventure interdimensional traveller and you will just have to see it to appreciate the greatness it attempted and to lament that we will never see Buckaroo Bonzai go up against the world crime league. Some great performances by John Lithgow and Jeff Goldblum before they became big names. The movie is a total package which gets you going into its world despite the lunacy.

Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai is an offbeat cult Sci-Fi. Full of wry and quirky one-liners. Colorful heroes and alt-dimension fiends. A clever head-scratching plot. Nefarious aliens clash with friendly aliens, rock band and rocket scientists. It features mashed up space ships and gadgets. And the film looks pristine on this remastered blu ray from Shout Select. The extras are great. New extensive interviews with the cast regale how much they enjoyed working together. And how the studio and the main producer failed to promote the movie properly. Couple fun commentaries by the director, staff, and pro fans are also included. A must buy for fans.

The movie: I have loved this movie since I was a kid and I found I like it even more now. It kind of defies categorization. It really is a one of a kind movie and not for everyone. I liken it to Monty Python, either you love it or you hate it. The blu-ray: This is an Australian release, no release for the USA at this time. The movie plays fine, open region. The small amount of special features will not play. I guess they are PAL. Nothing much there anyway so no big loss. If you love this movie, it is worth it to get this blu-ray. So glad I found it.

Great movie because of how different it is, fast pace. It is ahead of its time with great actors, scenes, and special effects. Too bad they did not have a sequel “Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League” which I was waiting for. The music for the end credits is great which I can listen to over and over. If you want to watch a different type of Sci-fi movie, I highly recommend you buy this movie and get it in blu-ray and hear the effects in hi-def.

This movie is a little hard to explain-- it's not really about the plot, but more about how it is told. It is kind of a sci-fi/comic book/action/comedy. Buckaroo Banzai is a hard rocking astrophysicist and adventurer who gets involved in a strange plot involving a mad scientist and two warring alien races. The movie is tongue-in-cheek clever with lots of great lines and odd sight gags. Just watch it, with an open mind.

As much as I dislike this cult-classic film, I'll be forever in its debt, as writer W.D. Richters script for its intended sequel eventually became the basis for John Carpenter's 'Big Trouble In Little China' (my all-time favorite movie). Unfortunately, for 'Buckaroo Bonzai,' the bizarre and muddled story casts a heavy shadow on the excellent cast and lavish production design. For those who did like the film though, here's a superb special edition featuring a beautiful anamorphic widescreen transfer.
