Synopsis

The Adventures of Robin Hood
In order to avoid the material copyrighted by Douglas Fairbanks Sr. for his 1922 Robin Hood, the scripters of this Flynn version relied on several legendary episodes that had never before been filmed, notably the battle between Robin and Little John (Alan Hale Sr., who played this part three times in his long career) and the "piggy-back" episode between Robin and Friar Tuck (Eugene Pallette). The film ties together the various ancient anecdotes with a storyline bounded by the capture in Austria of Richard the Lionheart (Ian Hunter) on one end and Richard's triumphant return to England on the other. Robin Hood is already an outlaw at the outset of the film, while Maid Marian (Olivia de Havilland) is initially part of the enemy camp, as one of Prince John's (Claude Rains) entourage. Marian warms up to Robin's fight against injustice (and to Robin himself), eventually becoming a trusted ally. James Cagney was originally announced for the role of Robin Hood, just before Cagney left Warner Bros. in a salary dispute. William Keighley was the original director, but he worked too slowly to suit the tight production schedule and was replaced by Michael Curtiz (both men receive screen credit). A lengthy opening jousting sequence was shot but removed from the final print; portions of this sequence show up as stock footage in the 1957 Warners film The Story of Mankind. The chestnut-colored Palomino horse ridden by de Havilland in the Sherwood Forest scenes later gained screen stardom as Roy Rogers' Trigger. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Never Bettered-A great truly enjoyable movie

A truly great classic that has never been topped by later versions. Warner Brothers certainly knew what it was doing with superb workmanship, use of color, music and spectacle. The story line and dialogue are easy to follow and straight-forward, exciting, and the whole thing is great fun. Errol Flynn was born to play Robin Hood. The movie demonstrates that by 1938 Hollywood had developed production values that quite honestly has never gotten any better. The WB Blu-ray transfer is superb--like it was filmed yesterday with super-clear color and definition. In earlier transfers you could sometimes see the beautiful velvet finishes on the clothes. In the new version you can actually see the weave. It's amazing that early techinicolor photography could be so clear and beautiful. The soundtrack has been significantly improved allowing many individual instruments (buried in past versions) to be heard clearly and with varying dynamics. Treat yourself to this joyous film--a film for everyone.

There shouldn't be much that needs to be said about the 1938 Errol Flynn Robin Hood on a critical level. If you haven't seen it, you need to. Done. This particular BluRay release of the film has a great bonus though. Night at the Movies 1938 has a brief intro by Leonard Maltin (?) talking about what an event going to a movie was back then, followed by a trailer for "Angels with Dirty Faces" (Cagney), a newsreel, an orchestral/swing performance, a Merry Melodies cartoon, and then flows right on into Robin Hood. It's just as if you'd been at the movie house in 1938. I highly recommend it! (I think it is my copy of Maltese Falcon that has a similar bonus.)

One of the best films to come out of Hollywood's Golden Age, brought to you by the same man who directed Casablanca. Flynn has never been better; DeHavilland and Rains are always great. This Blu-ray looks amazing on a big screen, the colors are very sharp. The sound is fine, but not great. The disc extras are superb; the commentary by Behlmer is very dry but also very informative. The documentaries (one on technicolor, one on the making of the film, each an hour long) are great (but not high-definition).

This is the original version of Robin Hood from the Golden Era of Hollywood. I watched this movies dozens of time since seeing it as a kid. It never gets old. Errol Flynn does an excellent job in this role. I was amazed how good this movie looked on Blu-ray considering it is over 70 years old. They did an outstanding job restoring it. The colors really pop. Bonus features galore if you have a few hours to sit through them. This is excellent entertainment for the whole family and a must buy movie!

This is simply one of the all-time greatest classics ever made, and time has done nothing to diminish its many charms. The Adventures of Robin Hood is one of those films that everyone must see at least once in their lifetime (and after you've seen it once, you're going to watch it again and again), and this Blu-Ray release is certainly the best way to see it.

I grew up watching this movie whenever it was on TV. Couldn't stream movies back then, we had to wait for it to come on again. Love the acting, story. You can still have a great movie without all the blood and gore of the action movies these days. That being said, I do like the Russell Crowe version too. Will watch this one over and over again.

One of the best films ever made, and definitely the best 'Robin Hood' movie for that matter. Beautifully shot in Technicolor, it's incredible how well this movie holds up, even by todays standards. This 2-disc special edition is jam-packed with bonus features! Highest Recommendation.
