    Synopsis

    The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Set in the present day, director Terry Gilliam's fantastical morality tale follows the traveling show of the mysterious Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) -- a man who once won a bet with the Devil himself, and possesses the unique ability to guide the imagination of others. Many centuries ago, Dr. Parnassus won immortality in a bet that found the malevolent Mr. Nick (Tom Waits) coming up short. While few would be foolish enough to try their luck against the powers of darkness a second time, Dr. Parnassus did precisely that -- this time trading his mortality for youth on the understanding that his firstborn would become the property of Mr. Nick when the child reaches his or her 16th birthday. Flash-forward to the present day, and Dr. Parnassus' daughter, Valentina (Lily Cole), is about to celebrate her sweet sixteen. Dr. Parnassus is desperate to save his little girl from her fiery fate, so when Mr. Nick arrives to collect, he senses the good doctor's malaise and cooks up a wager too enticing to refuse: Dr. Parnassus and Mr. Nick will each compete to seduce five souls, with possession of Valentina going to whoever manages to complete the task first. As the competition begins to heat up, a mysterious man named Tony (Heath Ledger) appears. Could Tony be the one man capable of helping Dr. Parnassus win the competition and save Valentina? While the sudden death of prominent Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus player Heath Ledger in January of 2008 left Gilliam and company scrambling to find a means of salvaging the film -- which was already well into principal photography at the time -- the cavalry soon arrived in the form of Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell, who each serve as alternate-dimension versions of Tony when the character crosses through a paranormal mirror. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This is not a typical Gilliam film. There is nothing typical about any of his films even if certain critics like to say so. He always goes for the unusual which is all you can say to catagorize them. The DVD transfer was done beautifully. The color composition in each scene was done with special care by those who understand not only what Mr. Gilliam wants, but what the audience should expect. Each time you step inside that miracle mirror you find such marvelous and imaginative scenes. It is unfortunate that Mr. Ledger was not able to finish the wonderful job he began, but again using his special imagination, Mr. Gilliam has performed a small miracle. Also, many thanks must be given to Jonny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell for not only capturing Mr. Ledger's on screen personality, but for doing it as a special dedication for him and his daughter who benefited since they turned their salary over to her. One can only hope that when she is old enough she will realize what a special and talented father she had for such a short time. The extras add to this special film and just watching Mr. Ledger clown around during a wardrobe test is worth 'the price of admission' alone to the doctor's Imaginarium.

Intro: I am one of the first people to receive "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" on blu-ray. I watched this movie with a 500 Watt 5.1 Logitech THX certified sound system on a 60GB 100% b/c PS3 on a 42" LG 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV. Image/Sound Quality: 6/5 Cinematography: 6/5 Story/Plot: 6/5 Acting: 7/5 Overall: Better than Avatar. May supersede my favorite movie of all time; Braveheart. Buy this, own this, watch it over and over again.

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus is vintage Terry Gilliam (the creative genius behind 12 Monkeys, Brazil, and the Monty Python classics). In any other film, the untimely passing of a lead actor would have sunk the project. In Imaginarium, Gilliam was able to get Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell to take on Heath Ledger's role and complete the film. Well acted, well written.

Of all the actors that have passed while filming a movie or in the process of filming a movie, this one was beautifully finished with the help of top quality actors stepping in to create a great movie that almost would not have been. Great story, visuals, just a really good product and a great homage to the late actor Heath Ledger!
