Synopsis

The Karate Kid
When a 12-year-old from Detroit moves to China with his mother and incurs the wrath of the class bully at his new school, he makes an unlikely ally in the form of his aging maintenance man, a kung fu master who teaches him the secrets to self-defense. Upon arriving at his new school, Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) develops a powerful crush on pretty classmate Mei Ying. The feeling is mutual, although the cultural divide between Dre and Mei Ying makes a friendship unlikely, and romance impossible. When cruel classmate and kung fu prodigy Cheng learns of Dre's feelings for Mei Ying, he harasses and humiliates the young outsider in front of the entire school. With no one to turn to for help, Dre confides his fears in kindly maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), a kung fu master who knows that serenity and maturity -- not punches and power -- are the true keys to mastering the martial arts. As Dre prepares to face down his intimidating tormentor, he begins to realize that the real fight is just beginning. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A fresh approach for a new generation.

Being a child of the 80's I was quite excited when I found out they were going to "re-vamp" the Karate Kid. With all the other remakes that have been coming out in the last couple of years, the Karate Kid seemed like an obvious choice. As with any remake I feel most of us are going to hold this movie under a microscope and expect it to be exactly like the original, which is where I feel they did a really good job... of NOT catering to those expectations. A lot of the elements from the original franchise are present, although it was updated, and adjusted enough to make the new Karate Kid its own movie. They spend more time introducing you to the characters of this movie where the originals revolved too much around 2 or 3 people, this one gives a better cast revolving more around the whole picture than just the "teacher/student/villian" character triangle. Jayden Smith is young, fresh faced, and has attitude, and while he still has a lot to learn about acting, for being 12 years old he's got some serious acting chops, it will be nice to see him grow and mature. I felt his acting and presence were a lot stronger than Ralph Machio was when he played the Kid in the 80's, but being that the acting world was quite different 16 years ago than it is today, comparing Jayden to Ralph, or this Karate Kid to the Original is like Apples to oranges. Jackie Chan is the man and always shines. I would have liked to see a little more action out of him, but I feel it would have taken away from the story. His physical humor always present allowed for a few laughs at just the right times. Finally the overall story was great. It wasn't just a boy learning to fight to keep bullies away. Without knowing it, he learned patience, respect, and the rewards that come from hard work.

The Karate Kid (2010) is a wonderful film for the whole family to enjoy. This package comes with a Blu-ray disc with the film playing in 1080p HD, a DVD copy, and a digital copy (a feature on the DVD) to put into your iPod or other mp3/mp4 player. The storyline is very similar to the original 1984 film. The acting is very good. Jaden Smith is very convincing with his emotions in the film. The battle sequences look brutal (more realistic) compared to the original. Cinematography is top-notch. The film is over two hours long. With parents of fairly younger viewers, here is the link to a parents' guide of the film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1155076/parentalguide

I liked the Original Karate Kid films from the 1980s, but this film works too, even though the kid is much younger- I think he should have been a little older, but as for technical quality- Mastered in 4K is the best to go for those who have existing BD players and not 4K UHD BD players. The picture and brightness for these films are pristine and the DTS HDMA 5.1 audio is crispy, pure digital clarity! I only wish it were 7.1 Dolby TrueHD.

Bought this as a gift for someone to complete their Karate Kid collection. But I saw this movie and it was okay. The fight scenes (especially with Jackie Chan) are good, but story is not believable that this kid could learn martial arts very quickly to compete against the other kid who looks like he's been doing it for several years.

I couldn't stop watching...........had tears in my eyes a few times. I have children and we have had to relocate in the past. I'm glad that they never endured the challenges faced by the Karate Kid. Cast and acting was fabulous in this movie. I recommend you buy the movie and add it to your collection immediately!!!! It was that great!!!!

It's a new Karate Kid dealing with social issues faced by a young boy who has just been relocated to China. It shows how he deals with class differences, bullying and general self esteem. Jaden smith provides deep personal feeling and emotion to this film. a must have film for any parent raising children in today's society.

I have played my dvd of The Karate Kid so much I thought it might go bad on me. So I purchased this Blu-Ray disc. The 'extras' are well worth the price plus this disc comes with an alternate ending--great idea! Even if you have the dvd, this Blu-Ray is well worth the extra money.

This is a great family movie. I purchased this for my 3 and 5 year old boys and they really enjoyed. My older son takes tae kwondo so he was more into the movie than my younger son. This is a really good movie and worth owning it.
