    Synopsis

    The Magnificent Seven
Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai (1954) is westernized as The Magnificent Seven. Yul Brynner plays Chris, a mercenary hired to protect a Mexican farming village from its annual invasion by bandit Calvera (Eli Wallach). As Elmer Bernstein's unforgettable theme music (later immortalized as the "Marlboro Man" leitmotif) blasts away in the background, Chris rounds up six fellow soldiers of fortune to help him form a united front against the bandits. The remaining "magnificent six" are played by Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, Horst Buchholz, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn, and (the one that everybody forgets) Brad Dexter. Though jam-packed with action, William Roberts's screenplay pauses long enough to flesh out each of its characters, allowing the audience to pick their own favorites. The Magnificent Seven was followed by three sequels, not to mention dozens of imitations. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Superb cast! I mean come on, Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn & Charles Bronson, etc. Yet, the underrated Eli Wallach is easily the most compelling character of all. His line about shearing "sheep" is classic. He makes a great bad guy. Watch this movie then see Eli in the Clint Eastwood flick "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" directed by Sergio Leone. He flat out steals that movie away from Clint & Lee Van Cleef in one of the great performances ever. Back to this one, Yul Brunner is the glue that holds all of the so called good guys together. Steve is cool of course but James & Charles (in lesser roles) are more interesting. Simple story but well paced, carried by the great cast. If I could go 4.5 stars I would but 4 wouldn't be justice hence 5 stars. It's a classic & I'm sure it is far superior to the remake which didn't reach out & grab me on the trailers. See it, you'll enjoy.

Having watched the Denzel Washington version of the Magnificent 7, it had been awhile since I had seen the original - and, instead of finding it somewhere in the Cable Channel Guide, I thought it would be worth the investment of purchasing a Blu-Ray version if it was available - and, fortunately, as Best Buy sometimes does, I was able to pick it up. Re-purposing old movies in Blu-Ray high definition only adds to the overall viewing experience, especially in wide-screen, enhanced color and a sharp picture - certainly better than watching it on TV. Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn; the characters and the storyline have held up over time - and, you just can't beat the original music.

I purchased this movie - Magnificent Seven - so that I could compare it to the current remake. I was impressed with the many stars that acted in this movie. Charles Bronson, Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, Eli Wallach and James Coburn. It took me back to the glory days when I actually knew the actors names. This is a good movie and well acted. The scenery at times is outstanding. Has a fair amount of gun play as does the newer version. Found this version to be more realistic. However the newer version has a faster pace and is extremely more entertaining.

You can't be a true Western fan and not appreciate the rework done on this classic retelling of the 7 Samurai, but with a truly wild west slant. An all-star cast tell the story of a poor, isolated village overrun by bandits - and the bravado of the 7 men who are willing to take a stand against overwhelming forces. The documentary is a welcome addition for die-hard Western fans. This one is a MUST OWN if you're a true fan of the wild west.

Kurosawa’s seven samurai has been retold and retold in a number of guises. From a bugs life to the three amigos. But the magnificent seven is amongst the best. An amazing cast that produce story’s of Hollywood legend behind the camera, are an amzing ensemble in one of the best westerns in film history. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon in front of the Tv

When they came out with the remake of this classic, I went to the theater to see it because I remembered how great the original was. Well they don't make 'em like they used to, as my Dad always said. So that inspired me to buy a copy of the original because I haven't seen it in decades (it came out in 1960). Well it was just as awesome as I remembered it. If you haven't seen it in a while, you can pick it up for under $5, well worth it for nostalgia's sake alone.

Elmer Bernstein wrote a very moving score for this movie. I have not watched the recent version of the movie because I think it will not compare to this one (although if you like action, the newer one will probably be better; this one does not overdo the violence). It has some great actors in it, including Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen. It is a classic guys movie about some out-of-work gun-slingers who rescue a village from "banditos" in Mexico.

This is the same movie back in the 70s without HD remastered. It is still fun to watch. Although the sound is updated as 5.1 surround, I still cannot hear conversations and other sound effects very well from this DVD. Also there are only Spanish and French subtitles. Hopefully the copyright owner will allow a HD remastered version soon in the future. I will give it a five stars at that time, so I am only willing to give it a four stars for now.
