    Synopsis

    The Outlaw Josey Wales
Clint Eastwood's fifth film as a director and eighth Western as a star (ninth if you count Paint Your Wagon), The Outlaw Josey Wales chronicles the hero's violent journey westward after the Civil War. With fresh memoris of his family's slaughter by Red Leg soldier Terrill (Bill McKinney), Confederate Josey Wales (Eastwood) refuses to join his captain Fletcher (John Vernon) and the rest of his comrades in surrender to a U.S. Army regiment. Deemed a dangerous outlaw after a bloody one-man battle with that regiment, Josey is pursued by U.S. cavalry soldiers led by the unwilling Fletcher and the murderous Terrill, as well as by bounty hunters who eventually learn how coolly lethal Wales can be. Despite his desire to remain a lone fugitive, Josey soon has a crew of travelling companions that includes Cherokee Lone Watie (Chief Dan George) and the pretty Laura Lee (Sondra Locke) and her vigorous Grandma Sarah (Paula Trueman), settlers on their way to a ranch near ghost town Santa Rio. The few Santa Rio residents welcome the group, but their peace and Josey's burgeoning romance with Laura Lee are soon interrupted by Terrill's arrival. A skillfully violent man of few, well-chosen words, Josey Wales resembles Eastwood's previous Western heroes in Sergio Leone's trilogy, A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966). However, the emphasis on friends and family served notice that, in the words of one critic, "the Man With No Name doesn't live here anymore." Indeed, Josey Wales would be Eastwood's last western before 1985's Pale Rider. Although it did not garner similar critical praise when it was released, Eastwood considers The Outlaw Josey Wales to be the equal of the Oscar-winning Unforgiven (1992). ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

If any western (or any film, for that matter) came out at the right time, it was this one. 1976 was not only America's bicentennial, but the aftermath of the U.S.'s role in Vietnam. Hence, many felt the same way the characters in this film, which begins just as the Civil war is ending, do (basically picking up the pieces). The title character (Clint Eastwood) was a happy farmer until his family is slaughtered & himself left for dead by Union soldiers (led by Bill McKinney). He then spends the war with a ragtag group being a thorn in the Union's side. Once the war ends, their leader Fletcher (John Vernon) is tricked into having them surrender-only to have all his own men (save Wales) killed. As Wales is on the run toward Mexico, he finds himself reluctantly getting a new family as other drifters he encounters join him (including Sondra Locke & the scene-stealing Chief Dan George). Eventually, said Union soldiers catch up with them, leading to a memorable climax.

Though not quite on the same level as other Eastwood's western classics like "The Good The Bad and The Ugly", "The Outlaw Josey Wales" stands on its own and deserves to be viewed. It is gritty and westerns are meant to be. The plot isn't complicated, yet, the action scenes do hit hard. Eastwood's directorial effort shows skills and it is a prelude of things to come from him as a director. In my view, Eastwood's portrayal of the outlaw is a bit timid (if we were to compare it to those bandits from "The Wild Bunch") though the noise he makes through his words and actions is convicingly heard .

great addition to any dvd library, and when it was on sale for $5 I couldn't resist even though I've seen the movie several times on tv. I think this is one of the first of many movies with Sandra Locke, along with some other characters seen in future eastwood flicks (magnum enforcer, every which way but loose and subsequent sequels). The old indian delivers a great performance that is both genuine and comedic at times. the age old tale of revenge in the old west, a must see.

C'mon, it's Clint Eastwood! I used to make fun of his movies ( never watching them but been told they are " spaghetti westerns") Then my husband made me sit down and watch this movie among others, and I was hooked. I'm a sci-if fantasy girl myself, but now love westerns. "Dyin ain't much if a living boy" . He's got better one liners then Arnold lol. This is a great western. High Plains Drifter is my favorite though. Now if I could find that one on Blu Ray....

This movie still stands the test of time. Directed by Clint and starring his usual "stable" of actors that appear in most of his films, this tale of a man who just can't let it go in the post-civil war west. Picking up stragglers on journey of revenge for those that murdered his family and those who betrayed him while trying to protect the innocent. Awesome bonus features too!

Clint Eastwood presents a post civil war drama that has something for everyone. The photography, the cast and the story will take you through a gamut of emotions ranging from extreme sadness to light humor. Eastwood has a knack for making the story true. A must see. You may not know it but some of the lines in this movie have become commonplace expressions today.

I can't believe this movie is from 1976, and that is about when I saw it last until now when I bought it. What a great movie. Hard to believe 40 years old! I noticed that the scenes were rather dark in places, perhaps because the movie is old? Not sure, but I would have given it 5 stars otherwise. Still, reasonable price, great movie.

Clint Eastwood's sure-handed direction and wonderfully heart-aching performance lead this classic neo-Western and as usual, Eastwood casts the supporting parts perfectly with such vets as John Vernon and Chief Dan George. An American masterwork from a genuine no B.S. filmmaker with guns blazing.
