    Synopsis

    The Right Stuff
Covering some 15 years, The Right Stuff recounts the formation of America's space program, concentrating on the original Mercury astronauts. Scott Glenn plays Alan Shepard, the first American in space; Fred Ward is Gus Grissom, the benighted astronaut for whom nothing works out as planned; and Ed Harris is John Glenn, the straight-arrow "boy scout" of the bunch who was the first American to orbit the earth. The remaining four Mercury boys are Deke Slayton (Scott Paulin), Scott Carpenter (Charles Frank), Wally Schirra (Lance Henriksen) and Gordon Cooper (Dennis Quaid). Wolfe's original book related in straightforward fashion the dangers and frustrations facing the astronauts (including Glenn's oft-repeated complaint that it's hard to be confident when you know that the missile you're sitting on has been built by the lowest bidder), the various personal crises involving their families (Glenn's wife Annie, a stutterer, dreads being interviewed on television, while Grissom's wife Betty, angered that her husband is not regarded as a hero because his mission was a failure, bitterly declares "I want my parade!"), and the schism between the squeaky-clean public image of the Mercury pilots and their sometimes raunchy earthbound shenanigans. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Good story of America's pioneers of space flight

As an aerospace engineer, I am required by law to like this movie. Actually, I enjoyed it, and I think it is a good movie for a non-aerospace engineer to watch as well. The story follows the pioneering pilots of early supersonic aircraft through space flight. The story focuses on some historical basis, the obstacles of becoming test pilots, as well as the affect of the space training and flight on the families of pilots. Throughout the story humor is infused at certain points to lighten the mood. I especially like the rocket montage scene. Pop! The drawbacks to the movie are length and that certain sections of the movie drag.

When I saw this on Blu-ray I went crazy. The "Right Stuff" is a movie you must have in anyone's catalog. Watching all the young actors that went on to illustrious careers is great. This is how we went into outer space, caught up with the Russians and surpassed them. No one but the United States has landed a human being on the moon and returned home safely. These heroic boys started it all.

Touches on the basic history of the USA space program. Watching this with teenages brought up a lot of questions that lead to watch more movies of the history of the space program as well as a trip to the library. The story as it is told will make you laugh as well. A good movie to watch as a family.

Movie chronicles the beginning of NASA from Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier to the Mercury Astronauts which led to John Glenn becoming the first American to orbit the earth. It's a long movie w/ a few dead spots but entertaining to watch.

Watching it once again after several decades, transported me to the time I first watched, and it comes with all the good memories. You also see young stars that were starting to shine. And helps to remember the competition between Soviets and Americans.

Not only was the casting done right (the BEST) but the historical accuracy was spot on! Loved all the extras that this 30th Anniversary edition included. This film picked up 4 Academy Awards for sound, score, editing and best sound effects!

I remember the space program as a young child and to see it shown as it actually happened was great! I usually don't mind long films or factual films. This film is rather lengthy, but it is a good recording of the start of the space program.
