    Synopsis

    The Secret of Kells
Follow 12-year-old Brendan (voice of Evan McGuire) as he battles Vikings and confronts an ancient serpent god on a mission to locate a legendary crystal and complete the mythical Book of Kells. Brendan lives in a heavily fortified medieval outpost known as the Abbey of Kells, where the ongoing threat of Viking raids causes the peaceful monks to live in a state of constant fear. Along with his uncle, Abbot Cellach, Brendan labors to fortify the abbey walls daily so his people will be protected from invading forces. When the mysterious Brother Aidan arrives at the abbey carrying an unfinished tome filled mystical secrets, Brendan becomes illuminated, and his dormant talents are awakened. The book must be finished, but accomplishing that mission will be no simple task. As the Vikings close in, Brendan ventures into the surrounding forest and prepares to confront his darkest fears. Accompanying him on his dangerous mission is Aisling, a half-wolf/half-human fairy whose powers will help to guide Brendan through this enchanting yet dangerous new world. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Irish heritage for a new generation

I heard about this during the Oscars and had to wait until October for it to be released! It was worth it. The creators did a great job of blending ancient Irish mythology with early Christian-era legends to make a engaging and memorable story. My kids, 15, 11 and 9 really enjoyed it. Their favorite element was the character of a cat, Pangur Ban, who helps move the story along. Do yourself a favor and look up the name of the cat and other characters. It will make your movie experience all the richer. I also recommend watching it a second time in a day or two so you can appreciate all the nuances you missed the first time around. It was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. It was touted for the beautiful animation, and rightly so. I'd even call it mesmerizing. Attention to accurate historical detail was incredible, both in the animation and story line. I found it a great vehicle to introduce my kids to their ancestral heritage. Another movie in a similar vein is The Secret of Roan Inish (live action), one of my all time favorites. Enjoy!

The movie itself, is just so well drawn and put together, every single frame is a work of art. Just lovely! You find yourself staring at the artwork more so than focusing on the movie. The soundtrack is just as lovely as the movie, done by the same person did the score for the movie Coraline. A must see for all ages.

Super enjoyable story told through exquisitely beautiful animation and endearing characters brought to life by wonderful voice actors. It's a move you must own even if you don't have young children.

The animation is a little primitive much like Sleeping Beaut.y. It has a fair plot, but I could have used a little more insight into the subject, as I had not heard /read much about that previously.
