    Synopsis

    The Ten Commandments
Based on the Holy Scriptures, with additional dialogue by several other hands, The Ten Commandments was the last film directed by Cecil B. DeMille. The story relates the life of Moses, from the time he was discovered in the bullrushes as an infant by the pharoah's daughter, to his long, hard struggle to free the Hebrews from their slavery at the hands of the Egyptians. Moses (Charlton Heston) starts out "in solid" as Pharoah's adopted son (and a whiz at designing pyramids, dispensing such construction-site advice as "Blood makes poor mortar"), but when he discovers his true Hebrew heritage, he attempts to make life easier for his people. Banished by his jealous half-brother Rameses (Yul Brynner), Moses returns fully bearded to Pharoah's court, warning that he's had a message from God and that the Egyptians had better free the Hebrews post-haste if they know what's good for them. Only after the Deadly Plagues have decimated Egypt does Rameses give in. As the Hebrews reach the Red Sea, they discover that Rameses has gone back on his word and plans to have them all killed. But Moses rescues his people with a little Divine legerdemain by parting the Seas. Later, Moses is again confronted by God on Mt. Sinai, who delivers unto him the Ten Commandments. Meanwhile, the Hebrews, led by the duplicitous Dathan (Edward G. Robinson), are forgetting their religion and behaving like libertines. "Where's your Moses now?" brays Dathan in the manner of a Lower East Side gangster. He soon finds out. DeMille's The Ten Commandments may not be the most subtle and sophisticated entertainment ever concocted, but it tells its story with a clarity and vitality that few Biblical scholars have ever been able to duplicate. It is very likely the most eventful 219 minutes ever recorded to film--and who's to say that Nefertiri (Anne Baxter) didn't make speeches like, "Oh, Moses, Moses, you splendid, stubborn, adorable fool"? ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a beautiful render of a great Biblical film into HD, with exceptional detail, color & sound. Of course it is no where near the perfection of Ben Hur 50th Anniversary edition since that film was scanned with an 8k resolution process & 10 Commandments with a 6k restoration almost gives this new release equal standing, but one will notice quickly that the rear projection effects of this 1956 film do not hold up well with obvious overlapping and line separation between subject matter & backgrounds but this was all new territory back in the 50's & is completely excusable. Colors are gorgeous, deep & rich with focus the epitome of perfection, this film was more concerned with the art, than it was about profits, this film could never be made today, since the cost would outweigh the profit margin! Sound Quality is the best it will ever get, since the source material is limited to its Mono source, but the cleanup, separation & tonal quality of this revision are top notch, never sounding better since inception. Absolutely a film with some of it's era's greatest actors, dialog is engaging & scripting intelligently conveyed attempting to keep some type of honest interpretation of Biblical events, while not boring the viewer. I wholeheartedly recommend this Blu-Ray release it is just a beautiful film to behold in HD & is wholesome entertainment for the family.

I was surprised to find this movie on DVD and totally shocked to find it on Blu-Ray. With today's advances in film making and CG, this 56 year old movie was completely outstanding. Even the miracle scenes looked real.. One of the great many things I always loved about this movie was how it took at least one "direct quote" from the Bible. Many people don't know or realize it but the Bible does say "pharoh glorified God by saying HIS God IS God" and these were Yul Brynner's last words in the movie.

Surprisingly good quality for this year of movie. I bought this to see with the family during Easter weekend. I actually thought the kids might be underwhelmed since this is a much older production. Wow, I was wrong. We all thoroughly enjoyed watching it. This has now become a new family tradition.

This is truly a classic movie and for a movie that was released in 1956 has decent special effects. What a story Moses and the ten commandments and the empire of Egypt facing the power of the one true God .

Classic movie for every age. It's a very long movie. It has an intermission for sake! You need plenty of popcorn. It's better than all of the other bible-like movies that have came out since, and you can't beat the price.

The Ten Commandments was one of the best movies I can remember when I was a child and now I want to share it with my family. Great Bible story about The 10 Commandments for a reasonable price.
