Long before John Carpenter’s 1982 remake freaked us out, this sci-fi classic adapted from John W. Campbell’s story “Who Goes There?” frightened postwar audiences with a menacing invader that may be more carrot than creature. While the 1951 film, produced by genre master Howard Hawks, couldn’t, uh, incorporate the shape-changing concept, it abounds with great characters, atmosphere, and suspense. Trimmed after initial theatrical release, Warner Archive has restored the full film from the best elements possible, with the presentation ranging from very good to excellent. The only extra is a trailer, which is disappointing (the audio commentary by John Carpenter from a UK DVD edition would have been sweet), but kudos to WB for a fine HD presentation that’s a treat for all classic sci-fi fans.

It may have been eclipsed by the superior 1982 remake, but “The Thing From Another World” still holds up remarkably well given its age. My mother shared this one with me years ago (it terrified her as a child). The characters, while simple, are well played and the building tension is still palpable even seventy some-odd years later.
Sadly, the only special feature is a trailer, but the movie itself is well worth the price.

This transfer is clear, perfect from what I remember from theatre screening. The film always struck me as scary, wondering if aliens are out there ready to bounce on earth for take over.
The Thing From Another World seems very real, as the actors talk over each other for realism. This adds much to the film

James Arness, before Gunsmoke, played the vegetable thing from outer space. A great script produced by the legendary Howard Hawks creating a suspenseful sci-fi movie. And never looked better on blue ray

scores on blu ray! The transfer looks aged in some spots, but wayyyy more impressive than the old DVD. However, save that DVD for the commentary, as it's NOT on this release.

Outstanding and timeless horror/SciFi flick. Howard Hawks knocked it out of the park with this claustrophobic, suspenseful classic.
