    Synopsis

    The Untouchables
Like the TV series that shared the same title, The Untouchables (1987) was an account of the battle between gangster Al Capone and lawman Eliot Ness, this time in the form of a feature film boasting big stars, a big budget, and a script from respected playwright David Mamet. Kevin Costner stars as Ness, a federal agent who has come to Chicago during the Prohibition Era, when corruption in the local police department is rampant. His mission is to put crime lord Capone (Robert De Niro) out of business, but Capone is so powerful and popular that Ness is not taken seriously by the law or the press. One night, discouraged, he meets a veteran patrolman, Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), and discovers that the acerbic Irishman is the one honest man he's been seeking. Malone has soon helped Ness recruit a gunslinger rookie, George Stone (Andy Garcia), and, joined by nebbish accountant Oscar Wallace (Charles Martin Smith), the men doggedly pursue Capone and his illegal interests. At first a laughingstock, Ness soon has Capone outraged over his and Malone's sometimes law-bending tactics, and the vain mobster strikes back in vicious style. Ultimately, it is the most unexpected and minor of crimes, tax evasion, which proves Capone's undoing. All of the credits for The Untouchables boasted big names, including music from Ennio Morricone and costumes by Giorgio Armani. Director Brian De Palma continued his tradition of including a homage to past masters of the cinema with a taut stairway shoot-out reminiscent of a similar sequence in Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin (1925). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Lets admit the horrible truth: Kevin Costner is incapable of acting. A pine two-by-four has more charisma than Costner, who plays a wooden and cloddish Elliot Ness. This movie is saved by excellent direction, Robert De Niro, and the actor who plays arch bad guy, Nitty. Sean Connery does a great tough Irish cop, too. The bad guys simply ooze evil and delicious complexity from every pore, while the "good guy" Costner simply takes up space as the "hero." For movie history buffs, there is a brilliant tip of the hat to the Battleship Potemkin. An excellent movie all around, although there is a ridiculous scene where the heroes are riding horses in an incredulous and patently stupid "shoot 'em up." The true story of Elliot Ness and the Untouchables is probably a lot more interesting, and it is doubtful he ever rode a horse in the Canadian /USA wilderness in search of bootleggers. .

Untouchables is a great movie that I wish I could rate more 5 stars. This movies is a classic, and not only a great crime thiller but a great movie under any genre. Untouchables features the amazing acting of Robert Deniro. The Untouchables is a 1987 American crime drama directed by Brian De Palma and written by David Mamet. The film is based on the book The Untouchables. This film stars Kevin Costner as government agent Eliot Ness who is attempting to take down Al Capone. The movie also features Robert De Niro, Sean Connery, and Andy García. Untouchables was nominated for the Academy Award in the following categories: Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Sean Connery, Won), Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Score. Thank you for reading my review.

Not bad - but not the best of the genre either.

The Untouchables recounts the story of the battle between Federal Agent Eliot Ness and mobster Al Capone in Prohibition-era Chicago. Ness's team does all it can to uncover evidence while staying within the limits of the law, but fail. That's when Eliot learns to push the boundaries a bit, thanks to a tough city cop played by Sean Connery. Although the story goes over the top at times, it's still a watchable movie, especially showing a short-lived slice of American history (when booze was illegal). The best part of the story is the Feds dogged pursuit of Capone's shady financial shenanigans, which eventually prove to be his undoing. In this country, convicting a murderer on tax evasion charges turns out to be pretty effective!

Brian De Palma's sublime adaptation of the TV series of the same name follows Eliot Ness's (Kevin Costner) attempts to bring down Al Capone (Robert De Niro), who rules Prohibition-era Chicago with an iron hand. After Ness's initial attempts end in failure, a lonely, depressed cop (Sean Connery) agrees to help him by showing him how Chicago operates. To that end, they enlist the aid of a rookie cop (Andy Garcia) & an accountant from Washington (Charles Martin Smith). As their success against Capone increases, so does Capone's determination to destroy them. The sublime acting, production values, & Ennio Morricone's music are added pluses to this film, which proved that there was more to De Palma than just his attempts to emulate Hitchcock.

One of my absolutely favorite movies of all time!! Superb actors, Connery, a young Costner, DeNiro & other great actors play supporting roles very well. Great insight/taste of the Prohibition Era, good vs evil. I have low tolerance for violence & this has plenty, but I'd say more cops & robbers type violence than just completely unnecessary violence to get ratings. It was a violent time in history but I can watch with 10-12 year old sons & it is OK in my opinion as long as there is an adult supervising to explain those parts of the movie & why people did what they did. No inappropriate adult situations & the violence is nothing compared to the movies of 2015.

Classic Prohibition era gangster movie based on the legendary TV series. It's a fictionalized portrayal of federal agent Eliot Ness' fight against Al Capone and other gangsters who made money selling alcohol at a time when it was illegal to do so. Kevin Costner works well as the leader, Ness, with tremendous support from Sean Connery and Andy Garcia. Robert Deniro's performance as Al Capone is both hilarious and scary. My only gripe with this particular Blu-Ray release is that the extras are very similar to the DVD version. I was hoping for more bonus features as well as maybe some newer material for this specific Blu-Ray release. Nonetheless, it's still a great movie to own.

Thought this was going to be a kickass movie but it was more on the cheesy side to me. There was too much hero stuff going. I wanted to see more of a gangster type of life in what the movie gave but I didn't feel it delivered as anticipated. More rawness is what I craved but lacked to see. De Niro playing a boss in this too is a big let down. Others may like this movie but I like hardcore and I didn't get that feeling mostly heroism than anything. I wouldn't recommend this.
