    Synopsis

    The Wild Bunch
"If they move, kill 'em!" Beginning and ending with two of the bloodiest battles in screen history, Sam Peckinpah's classic revisionist Western ruthlessly takes apart the myths of the West. Released in the late '60s discord over Vietnam, in the wake of the controversial Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and the brutal "spaghetti westerns" of Sergio Leone, The Wild Bunch polarized critics and audiences over its ferocious bloodshed. One side hailed it as a classic appropriately pitched to the violence and nihilism of the times, while the other reviled it as depraved. After a failed payroll robbery, the outlaw Bunch, led by aging Pike Bishop (William Holden) and including Dutch (Ernest Borgnine), Angel (Jaime Sanchez), and Lyle and Tector Gorch (Warren Oates and Ben Johnson), heads for Mexico pursued by the gang of Pike's friend-turned-nemesis Deke Thornton (Robert Ryan). Ultimately caught between the corruption of railroad fat cat Harrigan (Albert Dekker) and federale general Mapache (Emilio Fernandez), and without a frontier for escape, the Bunch opts for a final Pyrrhic victory, striding purposefully to confront Mapache and avenge their friend Angel. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

A really great blu ray transfer

If you've watched the movie, you know how great it is and how the performances really hold this movie up. Well, this movie is over 40 years old and usually the look really bad, right? Wrong. This version of "The Wild Bunch" in blu ray is gorgeous. You can see the wrinkles and the sweat on Holden's face. You can see the bright-red blood with such clarity that you will be stunned at how violent this movie was for being filmed so long ago. The shots of the desert and the gang riding around in the west are gorgeous. If you love this movie, definitely buy this on blu ray. You will NOT be disappointed!

This movie is how I judge all future action films.

Even if you don't like Westerns, this film is not to be missed. Sam Peckinpah was the first director to use the exploding blood packs that today is a standard action norm. The ending scene where the film's aging cowboys decide to make "one last stand" has been cited by many directors as a classic that inspired them & their work. The film's cinematography and camera angles are stunning and even younger viewers used to today's "high tech" stunt work will be impressed by this film's action sequences.

This is probably my second favorite Peckinpah film, the first being Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. I love his gritty violence, it makes you cringe but how can you look away. A western classic. Up there in my favorite westerns. 1. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 2. The Good, The Bad, The Ugly 3. Shane 4. 3:10 to Yuma (remake) 5. Johnny Guitar 6. The Naked Spur 7. The Wild Bunch 8. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 9. The Proposition 10. The Searchers

Ultraviolent film that set the stage for action movies in the decades to come. People have complained about the sound but it sounded fine (not great, but certainly not terrible) on my 5.1 setup. The disc is chock full of extras, including a feature-length documentary about Peckinpah.

Film established a new standard in Hollywood for overt graphic violence which was a new “first” in the motion picture business. Rates as one of the all-time greatest Westerns – an absolute must for all Western Buffs to view.

One of the first of the "bloody" movies. Old outlaws at the end of their days with one last statement to make. Well acted, well directed. A classic western. If you like westerns, this is one to own.
