What an amazingly tender piece of film art. VIewers of Malick films are usually polar opposites, some love him, some hate him. I happen to love him. If you're looking for typical romantic drama, with a typical plot, this film might frustrate you. But if you enjoy beautifully inspired cinematography, elliptical editing and contemplative meditations on life, love and existentialism then this film will delight. Is this his best film? No, but it's a great addition to this auteur's catalog. In many ways it feels like an addition or continuation of the world created in The Tree of Life but more focused on love and the lack thereof... Malick is a filmmaker creating art rather than turning out cheap and boring cookie-cutter hollywood stories. He realizes the power of image, sound, dialog and theme and uses them to create emotions rather than straight beginning, middle and end stories. So if you're in the mood to really feel deep emotions and be swept away into the minds of lovers then pop it in your player. I recommend the Blu-ray version- great transfer. Wish there were even more extras but the extras that are included do shed some light into the process of creation. I do hope The Criterion Collection will do their own version with more extras and the great cover art and essays. (Don't be fooled by the lack of inspiration in this dvd cover design)

      Malick at His Most Underrated

"To the Wonder" isn't an easy film to experience because, as with most of Terrence Malick's movies, there isn't an easy way to describe it. The best thing to do is just throw yourself into it headfirst with an open mind for what's on Malick's. A sparse yet deeply powerful meditation on love, both romantic and spiritually, "To the Wonder" is sumptuously photographed and well acted by a cast who act through emotion over dialogue. Also worth owning on Blu-Ray especially for the powerful clarity of Emmanuel Lubezki's photography and the precise sound mix. Bonus features are few, but revealing of how the behind the scenes work on a Malick set.

After falling in love with The Tree of Life and The Thin Red Line, I became an avid fan of Terrence Malick's films. "To the Wonder" was the third Malick film I had the chance of watching, and it was perhaps my excessively high expectations or the beautiful trailer that preceded the film's premiere, but I was at first underwhelmed. Eventually, the film grew on me and I wanted to watch it again, with the second viewing turning out to be more rewarding than the first. A very intimate look into an intimate relationships and the challenges that follow them.

If you like Terrence Malick movies, you will appreciate this movie. Its like the rest as it uses of visual art and acting to convey emotions. If you need a straightforward plot that explains exactly what is happening at all times, you may not like this.

He's an acquired taste, but he's still a master filmmaker interested in pushing the boundaries of the process. Thanks to BB for getting it to me in a couple days.

I couldn't get into the movie and turned it off after a half hour. It was not interesting. It didn't make sense. It was hard to watch Ben Affleck in this movie after watching him in Argo.

Truly a demo disk for blu-ray video quality if there ever was one.
