Synopsis

Tombstone
A high-energy action adventure based on legend rather than historical fact finds Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) desiring to retire from law enforcement. With brothers Virgil (Sam Elliot) and Morgan (Bill Paxton), he arrives in Tombstone, Arizona intending to build his fortune. He discovers that long-time friend Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) is there and that the town is run by a group of brutal outlaws called the Cowboys. Earp, frustrated with his laudanum-addicted wife, begins a romance with traveling stage actress Josephine Marcus (Dana Delany). Meanwhile, the Cowboys terrorize the citizens of Tombstone unchecked. When the town marshal is killed by a Cowboy, Earp steps in to prevent a lynching by an angry mob. He also refuses to hand the killer over to his fellows, beginning the enmity between the Cowboys and the Earp brothers. Virgil, overcome with guilt at doing nothing to help the Tombstone citizens, accepts the position of town marshal. With Wyatt and Morgan as his deputies, and the help of Doc, Virgil attempts to arrest several Cowboys, resulting in the famous OK Corral shoot-out. The Cowboys take revenge by ambushing two of the brothers and injuring Virgil and killing Morgan. The Earps leave town, apparently cowed. Wyatt returns, wearing the badge of a U.S. marshal, vowing to destroy every last Cowboy. He hunts them mercilessly, until the leader, Johnny Ringo (Michael Biehn) challenges Wyatt to a duel. While not regarded as an artistic masterpiece, "Tombstone" is considered the best of director George P. Cosmatos' prolific films. The all-star cast (including Thomas Haden Church and Billy Bob Thornton in small roles) delivers solid performances. Both William A. Fraker's cinematography and Bruce Broughton's stirring musical score are expertly designed for dramatic effect. Blood is shown liberally in several key scenes, but seems intended to show that there is nothing glorious in Wyatt Earp's actions, only necessity. He and his deputies take on the symbolism of the horsemen of the apocalypse -- dispensing judgement, and the Biblical references form a symmetry at the beginning and end of the film. ~ Lucinda Ramsey, Rovi

Chances are you’ve seen this movie or heard about it many times, so I won’t bother with reviewing it. The movie itself is a modern classic, the blu is.....decent. PQ is in and out. There are times it looks fantastic, and others it looks like I’m watching the dvd. The AQ is fantastic. If you have a 5.1, it sounds great. Gunshots are loud, horse chases sound fantastic, the overall surround is great. The other odd thing is the omission of the director commentary and the directors cut (which was only a few added scenes). If you have the old 2 disc dvd set, keep it for the extras. This is the best Tombstone has looked and sounded, so worth the upgrade for >$10.

Not Entirely Historically Accurate, But Still Good

For a western that comes between the original era of westerns with the likes of John Wayne, and Clint Eastwood and...making cowboy movies based on Samurai movies originally done by Akria Kurosawa; and this new attempt at a resurgence, Tombstone was a pretty good western, and pretty good as a movie in general. It's almost completely inaccurate, aside from people's names a few storylines and the shootout at the O.K. Corral, but it's still good. Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday got most of the good lines and pretty much just owned the movie. Kurt Russell was good, but he's better in John Carpenter movies. Overall though the entire cast was pretty good at playing their roles. It's not exactly Shakespearean or even equal to some of the earlier wetserns, but for it's time it's one of the best of it's kind and it's worth it for the characters and just being an enjoyable ride.

    Great western!

My wife and I love this movie! We aren't exactly fans of westerns. In fact, as movie collectors, we have around 2,000 DVDs. Out of that, only a dozen are westerns. In other words, it has to be really good! Tombstone is probably the best western ever made, in my opinion, next to Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood. If you like westerns, you've probably already seen it. If you're not fond of westerns like us, you need to watch this one! Trust me, it's worth it! Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer are at thier best! I highly recommend this film! Also, there's an alternate version of this film entitled Wyatt Earp, starring Kevin Costner and Dennis Quaid.

By now, you’ve either seen this or heard enough about it. I just want to touch on the PQ/AQ of the blu. The AQ is excellent and is worth adding to your collection for that alone. The PQ......leaves a bit to be desired. The sharpness comes and goes. Sometimes, it’s fantastic, while others looks no better than the dvd. And be warned, this disc is missing a few features, such as the director commentary.

Tombstone is one of the top 3 favorite western moves of all time. I was pleased to see this movie on blu-ray, and i hope to purchase it on 4K someday. It has more action and drama from some of the best actors giving their greatest performances, and memorable moments that will have you watching Tombstone again and again and again. Don't miss out on this epic film.

one of my favourite "new" westerns from the 90's. an updated version based on the of the legend (rather than 100% historic account) of Wyatt Earp and his brothers & Doc Holiday in legendary Tombstone Arizona. Loaded with star power Kurt Russell, Val Kilmir, Bill Paxton, Sam Elliot, Jason Priestly, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, Charleton Heston just like the classic westerns of the 50's used to be a who's who of Hollywood. Unfortunately the BluRay does not have much to offer in the way of extras.

The Blu-ray provided a great picture and sound. This is one of my favorite westerns of all time. Kurt Russell plays legendary lawman, Wyatt Earp, and Val Kilmer gives a great performance as his friend, Doc Holliday. For good measure Sam Elliott plays Virgil Earp and Powers Boothe plays bad cowboy Curly Bill Brocious. Dana Delany plays Wyatt's love interest. You get the Gunfight at the Ok corral and lots of Western Action. Watch This One.

Great Western.... Bad Blu ray convert

This is the reference western which deserves a Blu ray version but unfortunately the conversion to Blu ray has failed miserably. Lots of grain and snowy video noise is evident in many scenes. You would think as popular as this movie is, the finest technology would have been applied. Nothing much added to the extras and the DTS-Master Audio is OK. I have found that the Vista Series version is the best value for this movie.
