    Synopsis

Toto: 25th Anniversary - Live in Amsterdam
The Grammy award winning rock band Toto, a group formed by respected sessions musicians, performs their biggest hits in Amsterdam on this concert film. In addition to medleys of some of their songs, the band delivers full versions of such classics as "Africa," "Rosanna," "Hold the Line," and a cover of The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." The DVD release of the concert offers footage of the Through the Looking Glass tour. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

As a professional keyboardist, my DVD concert library has over 100 titles, and this is always somewhere in my "top 5," depending on my mood. Steve Lukather's guitar playing is nothing short of astonishing. Ridiculous. Breathtaking. Superb camera work gets us right into the technical meat of the many guitar, synthesizer, and bass solos. David Paich's keyboard playing is also terrific, carrying out many of the riffs in a fashion faithful to the original recordings. About the only minor disappointment in this otherwise stellar setlist is the non-inclusion of one of their first hits, "99." However, many veteran fans will recognize tidbits from that song's melody in Paich's keyboard solo. This recording also showcases some of Bobby Kimball's best singing in recent memory - it's great to see him back with the band again. What a coup for these guys to have landed drummer par excellance, Simon Phillips, for this tour. Simon is certainly one of the top technical drummers around, and his talents are showcased in the superb readings of "Africa" and "Rosanna." You can just feel great anticipation in some of his long, drawn out and soaring triplet beats in the former song. They are right on the money. The Dutch audience is right with them, rocking out, and providing the kind of high energy feedback that just makes the band that much more potent in its delivery of songs. At the end of the day, this is a masterpiece concert. A "complete" performance (whatever that means!).... Truly this DVD concert is right up there with the Boz Scaggs live concert (possibly the best one in my whole set), Pink Floyd's "Pulse" (which contains the entire "Dark Side of the Moon" live), The Eagles "Farewell Tour" double-DVD set from Australia, and Godsmack's "Changes" DVD, which contains the most ridiculous dual drum solo I have ever seen live. But for Toto fans, "Live from Amsterdam" is a must-have DVD.
