    Synopsis

    Troy
Homer's sprawling tale of love and war in ancient Greece comes to the screen in all its grandeur in this epic-scale adventure. In 1193 B.C., Paris, Prince of Troy (Orlando Bloom), has fallen in love; however, the beautiful woman who has beguiled him is Helen, Queen of Sparta (Diane Kruger), who is wed to King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson). While Helen is hardly immune to Paris' charms, this doesn't blunt Menelaus' fury when Paris steals her away from him. Menelaus' brother Agamemnon (Brian Cox), the power-hungry king of the Mycenaeans, is eager to expand his empire through Troy to the lands of the Aegean Sea, and he uses Paris' romantic slight against Menelaus as an excuse to wage an all-out war against the great walled city. Priam, King of Troy (Peter O'Toole), summons his armies, led by Prince Hector (Eric Bana), to meet the onslaught of Agamemnon's forces, but while the great city has yet to yield in a battle, Agamemnon has a formidable ally -- Achilles (Brad Pitt), a mighty and seemingly unstoppable warrior whose presence could tip the scales in Agamemnon's favor. Sean Bean, Julie Christie, Saffron Burrows, and Rose Byrne highlight the film's supporting cast. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The movie, albeit long, moves along a good pace, with mercifully brief romantic and philosophical breaks between the combat scenes. This movie is action, with more than a little thought put into accurately presenting the realities of the tactics used in Greek warfare. Troy is also to be congratulated for not over-armoring the cast like previous Hollywood productions and staying true to the lightness of armor prevalent during the historical period. Lovers of Homer and Greek mythology may be disappointed but keep in mind this film is about the Trojan War, not the Iliad. This war is epic in scale and isn't about poetry. Still, it would be great if Sean Bean were given the opportunity to play Odysseus again. Although not on screen much in Troy, his performance is edgy and true to the legends of the cunning king of Ithaca.

A Little Better Than The Original

I am a big fan of extended and director's cuts and this is one of them. It's no 'Lord of the Rings' or 'Kingdom of Heaven' cuts, but it did liven up the story a bit. There are more action clips incorporated into the already existing ones (Warning to parents: the scenes are more graphic than before and). The extra clips go into the lives of the characters more, which is always a bonus. If you haven't seen 'Troy' already, this is something you would want to buy, but if you have, it is a great addition to your collection.

This film came out not long after the Lord of the Rings. I enjoyed it immensely at the time. After seeing Rings, I was ready for a epic scale film about the Battle Of Troy. I enjoy much of Brad Pitt's work and his performance in Troy is one of my favorites. He is intense, intimidating, and when he fights, he is an butt kicker, and pulls it off perfectly. There are times in the film when Pitt looks like a Greek statue. I thoroughly enjoyed the extra scenes in the movie. I tend to prefer Director's/Extended Cuts, and I do prefer the Director's Cut over the theatrical version. Recommended to all

Troy is of reference quality on Blu-ray. Each color is reproduced with stunning clarity and lifelike accuracy. The greens of the foliage seen throughout the picture from time to time are also faithfully reproduced. Detail is very high. Characters look strikingly real and their clothing and armor look great.Nearly as good as the video quality is the PCM uncompressed 5.1 soundtrack that accompanies the film. Finally breaking away from their norm of releasing Blu-ray discs with only a lossy Dolby Digital track, the inclusion of the PCM track hopefully represents a new direction with the Warner Bros.

I purchased the Blu-Ray version for obvious reasons. Thoroughly enjoyed the added scenes, however I was disappointed about ONE thing. The music that played during the battle scene between Achilles and Hector was different in the Blu-Ray version, & even tho' I understand this was a decision made by the movie studio, I firmly believe they didn't think that through as well as they should have. Big mistake. The music during the fight in the original version appeared more fitting for a duel-to-the-death! Someone tell the director he is fired!

I like this movie very much. The critics gave it a bad rap. The only problem I have with the extended cut is that the CGI blood looks pretty fake. But the copy of the film and the extras are all excellent. The best part is the fight between Brad Pitt's Achilles and Eric Bana's Hector. The highlight of the movie. I didn't mind that the Gods were mostly left out, it gave it a more realistic feel. Brian Cox is as usual, tremendous.

I really enjoyed Troy. Unlike other epic films regarding ancient lands or myths a la Alexander, the movie moves very well. There seems to be a fluidity to the plot unlike a lot of films of the same genre. Likewise, the acting is very well done, specifically from Eric Bana and Brad Pitt. They adequately capture the perspective of the brooding hero who faces attacks of conscience and morality while upholding imperial/national/operational loyalty. Overall, a very good film and very good effect work.

Normally I don't recommend additional releases of the same movie unless upgrading your definition however this unrated director cut surprised me, and even better made the movie more in-depth and exciting although raising the acceptable watching age in the process. So even if you own this on bluray, BUY THIS VERSION ONLY AT BESTBUY.COM You won't be caught with your shield down if you do so!
