    Synopsis

    Up
A feisty septuagenarian teams with a fearless wilderness ranger to do battle with a vicious band of beasts and villains in this computer-animated adventure scripted by Pixar veteran Bob Peterson and co-directed by Peterson and Monsters, Inc. director Peter Docter. Carl Fredricksen is a 78-year-old balloon salesman. His entire life, Carl has longed to wander the wilds of South America. Then, one day, the irascible senior citizen shocks his neighbors by tying thousands of balloons to his home and finally taking flight. But Carl isn't alone on his once-in-a-lifetime journey, because stowed away on his front porch is an excitable eight-year-old wilderness explorer named Russell. Later, as the house touches down on the world's second largest continent, Carl and his unlikely traveling companion step outside to discover that not only is their new front lawn considerably larger, but that the predators therein are much more ferocious than anything they ever faced back home. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This is a great movie, certainly worthy of it's Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Up follows the life of Carl Frederickson from his years as a young boy dreaming of adventure through his married life (this was told through a brilliantly executed montage# to his later years as a lonely widower #where the story picks up#. Carl sets off for South America by tying ballons to his house but he has an unexpected stowaway in the form of a talkative Wilderness Explorer named Russel. Carl and Russel, and a dog named Dug, have an exciting and suspenseful adventure in the wilds of Venezuela and along the way, we see that Carl and Russel both have voids in thier lives. This is yet another case where PIXAR takes an unusual premise and executes it brilliantly. The animation is astounding, some of the best I've ever seen on the big screen. Everything is so expertly drawn and beautifully animated. #it's a PIXAR movie, what do you expect?) The colors of the rainforest and the wildlife are rich and vibrant, it gives you the feeling of being there. The extras include featurettes on the research trip to Venezuela the PIXAR guys took with some insights on the conditions and wildlife in the area as well as a look at some of the process of making the movie itself. It also has the animated shorts 'Presto' and 'Dug's Special Adventure'. The Blu-Ray also has an interactive game where you can earn your Wilderness Explorer badge. Up really shines on Blu-Ray. The HD transfer puts everything in sharp focus and all the details come out beautifully. This is one movie that really deserves to be seen in High Defenition. Up is perfect family viewing. Something all-ages can enjoy. Highly recommended.

Pixar does a wonderful job with this film. They normally do, but this one goes beyond. The beginning is an emotional tale that leaves you wanting the best for Carl. I have watched each individual Pixar film, and animated films from all over, and I don’t believe there is a more emotional story to be told through animation than this. There is a Carl in all of us at some point in our lives. As a child, he sees his role model living out his dreams and fantasies, wanting nothing more than to one day be that person going on those adventures. He eventually gets married and a job, but throughout his life, that dream is still in the back of his head. After a life of disappointment, he finally has had enough and goes on his trip, with an unexpected twist, he brought along a little boy scout whose father had not been there for him much. You might say, ‘This all sounds sad for an animated film, especially Pixar and Disney.’ This movie is also very funny as all Pixar films, and in the end, you will be happy you watched it. I won’t say more, because the movie speaks for itself. I only hope Pixar will be able to follow up this accomplishment with the release of their next movie.

      Pixar is simply the best

If you're buying Blu-ray, Pixar movies are simply the best. Between Wall-E, Cars, Monsters, Inc., A Bug's Life, and Ratatouille, I don't think any other studio comes even close to offering you a clearer picture and better sound. This movie is very touching, and you will enjoy the adventure they take you on for 96 minutes. The characters are endearing and charming. Even though the main character is a somewhat bitter old man, they make it clear that even at an old age, one can manage to grow. Pixar always manages to make a film that appeals to adults and kids...and that's VERY difficult. We've asked several children what they remember about the movie. Many of them remember the little things like the dog, Doug, yelling "Squirrel!" and little jokes here and there. You may find the subtle things to be where the movie succeeds. I for one love the handprint on the mailbox, and the wonderful continuity of the grape soda pin. Also, not to give anything away, but the "married life" montage at the beginning of the movie may be the best 4 minutes you will ever see in any animated film ever. It is emotional, powerful, and brilliantly put together. And actually, upon second viewing, it hit me even harder. I can't recommend this film enough - it's a blast from start to finish.

I went to the movies and saw this in 3D and I didn't get much out of it. I purchased the movie and I still feel that way. Not to say that this is a bad film, no not at all because the company's grace is all over it. I watched the films bonuses and saw how they actually went to South America to get an understanding of the mountains which became paradise falls in the film. I have always respected Pixar for putting certain amounts of realism to their films. That brings me to my next point, Carl shouldn't be in anyway shape or form to perform some of the things he did in the movie. I know, I know its just a movie, but come on the level of strength he shown in the movie is ridiculous. The other thing is that the antagonist should have been dead a long time ago before Carl even began to think he was old. Overall this film is good despite the fact that they should have did something with the aging of the characters. Doug is a funny, very funny character. I say Pixar does it again so go get this one. It is very emotionally driven for the women, action packed for the men and good family fun for the kids.

Blu-ray movie is great but Digital Copy activation

I'm not going to write about Up itself since there are plenty of reviews about it. The Up Digital Copy has new security than previous Pixar movies. The Digital Copy activation process looked the same but after activated, it showed copying the Digital Copy to the hard drive but only a few seconds later it stopped reading from the DVD disc. There is no file on the hard drive. Checking the Digital Copy DVD, WMV directory, it has zero byte file. There is no way to reactivate or reinstall the Digital Copy once it failed to transfer to the hard drive. Even Disney Q&A site said there's no way to reinstall the Digital Copy. It's like the Digital Copy activation better work the first time or Digital Copy DVD disc becomes an useless piece of plastic. Limiting Digital Copy to one activation per PC is already a joke, but if it fails to install, there's no way to repeat the process is far more than a joke of the value of Digital Copy. Disney needs to understand putting too much security into a product makes it useless.

I wasn't sure if I was gonna like this Disney story but I ended up liking it a lot. It's a touching story about a guy who marries his childhood sweetheart and when she dies he decides to go on a trip that they never got a chance to go on together. Straight up, house and all with the use of helium filled balloons. His house gets surrounded by condos and when the city wants to tear down his home to make room for more condos he takes the whole house and flies away. The house represents his beloved wife and the trip they never got a chance to take together. For an older couple watching this movie it'll bring a tear to your eye and maybe help to rethink what's really important about life. An excellent movie I highly recommend.

      Another good film from Disney/Pixar

This film is another success for Disney/Pixar. Thankfully, they are different than the rest. They come up with original ideas. Beautiful animation. A disappointment-NO GOOD MUSIC. Remember when Disney films had good music/songs? Sure miss those days. Memorable songs? Oscar winning songs? Those were the days. This has the digital copy. Good idea, but I would like to see some different extras like Disney used to. More information on the film, showing more in depth stuff. NO chapter list, you just do NOT get these anymore & I want them. And, Disney/Pixar, why the horrible flip the little flap DVD case/holder? Now, I looked at the single disc DVD & IT DID NOT HAVE THIS HORRIBLE FEATURE, SO WHY DOES THE MORE EXPENSIVE HAVE THIS. Hate them.

This is a great movie it is whimsical, touching and while having lots of humor can still pull on your heartstrings. I liked that one of the protagonists is a senior and one of the enduring narrative threads is how much he loved and missed his wife. The animal characters provide lots of humor and really add to the story. The 2 shorts on the discs are funny and I recommend that the viewer take the time to watch them. This is a PG rate film and it does have some moments that a child might find scary when a kid is in jeopardy and the villain meets his just reward. I recommend this film for the young and the young at heart!
