    Synopsis

    Volver
Two sisters learn that the bonds of family don't always end after death in this gentle observational comedy drama that marks celebrated Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar's 16th feature. The story explores the interactions between three generations of women in a Spanish family. Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) was born and raised in the apocryphal village of Alcanfor de las Infantas, in La Mancha, Spain. However, she now resides in Madrid, where she works as a janitor. She is married to Paco (Antonio de la Torre), an unemployed layabout, and looks after her daughter, Paula (Yohana Cobo). Raimunda's mother, Irene (Carmen Maura), died several years back (along with her father) in a house fire. Raimunda's younger sister, Sole (Lola Dueñas), also lives in Madrid and works as a hair stylist, while their aunt Paula (Chus Lampreave) still makes her home in La Mancha, with occasional help from neighbor Agustina (Blanca Portillo). The story takes an unusual and mystical twist when Agustina mentions that Irene has begun reappearing in ghostly form -- a fact questioned by Raimunda and Sole. After a murder and an unexpected family tragedy, Paula's story is indeed corroborated by the appearance of Irene's spirit (who has come to comfort her family), and Sole must decide how to respond to the long-dead mother's strange, enchanting presence. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

What's there to critique about an Almdovar film? This movie is nearly flawless in every aspect. It's a superb foreign film which depicts family ties between mother and daughter that span over generations. Almodovar perfectly casts Cruz in the lead role, and she pulls it off well. This film is gripping and is sure to strike a chord when thinking about family. The film basically revolves around Cruz and the situations she's put in, including finding out whether her mother has really come back as a spirit to haunt her. This film is empowering for women with such strong female leads. I highly recommend you don't miss out.

anyone remotely familiar with pedro almodovar's previous work will undoubtedly vouch for his cinematic brilliance. to date, this may very well be one of his most gentle or heartfelt pieces which reinforces the importance of family bonds. volver is filled with intelligient dailgoue, frothy humor, & even a bit of suspense which should surely delight it's viewer. penelop cruz has given the best performance of her entire career & probability suggests we will more great things from her in the future. i can't speak highly enough of almodovar's latest. just see it if you haven't already!

I actually rented this movie first, and after seeing it I bought it. I have not seen a movie quite like it. A very different story line full of superstitions and really entertaining. Penelope did some great acting in this movie. Prior to watching this movie, I was not fond of her but she did very well in this role. It does very well in conveying the importance of family during struggles, but there may have been some parts where you just think they could have done something else to make it more realistic. Overall, I highly recommend this product!
