    Q: So after assembly, the empty space below the desk measures 34" x 28" x 17", my bookshelf that I want to put under the desk is an inch wider then that. Is the desk being held by the side units? Could I put these up a little wider apart?

Unfortunately, none of the pieces can be set up a little wider apart.
