    Frustrating Machine, 3 Stars

This has been the most frustrating appliance purchase I have ever made, and it had to be exchanged TWICE. The first one would not complete the final spin after draining the drum and finish the cycle on any setting except Normal Wash, and after installing the second and third units I'm 90% sure it was a return. A much larger amount of water came pouring out of the drain outlet than the second and third one when we removed the orange cap and it didn't come with the box insert in the washer with free samples and the manual like the second and third. The drain hose and manual were just sitting in the bottom of the drum. It was also covered in dirt smudges. The second unit was much louder than both the first and third washer, had a start/pause/cancel button that only canceled the cycle 1/10 times when I held it down for the 3 seconds and required me to unplug the entire thing from the wall to cancel the cycle, and would not get to the Wash cycle when trying to wash with Hot water on several cycle settings.  One of the most frustrating things about the machine and process itself is that the 'manual' is basically just the instructions on how to install it and a separate one page 'quick start' guide that only has details about the Normal Cycle. Neither explains that the washer will not run properly unless you follow their cycle guide settings exactly or how to recalibrate, reset or run diagnostics on the washer so you are forced to search on their website and on Google until you find the right Cycle Guide for your specific washer and the sequence of knobs to turn as you will find several different instructions for the same model, but only one of them will work. The first washer they delivered was putting out an error code for a faulty water level sensor and the second washer put out an error code for a faulty load sensor. The third washer they delivered is quieter than both of the first two (the second one was ATROCIOUS) and fingers crossed SEEMS to be working properly on each of the different cycles as long as the comprehensive cycle guide from Whirlpool's website is followed. All of these extra details and guides should be included with the washer sale and not only offered through download online since the washer can't operate properly without the proper cycle settings, which is NOT explained in the provided guides.   As referenced above the garbage 'Quick Start' guide that is provided does not make it clear that many of the cycles have specific settings you need to follow and the washer will NOT work properly unless you follow them. I was only able to figure this out after spending hours researching online and messing around with all the cycle settings (and wasting a ton of water). You will need to find the more detailed/expanded Cycle guide on Whirlpool's website to see what settings to follow/what setting options are available for each cycle as this information is not provided with the washer manuals. Whirlpool's cycle guide also does not follow the same cycle settings you might be used to doing with other washers and you can't just use whatever combination of settings you want. For example, if your model of Whirlpool washer doesn't have a specifically 'Towels' cycle you'll need to wash them on a Normal Cycle with Heavy Soil level, Hot Water and Deep Fill Water level and turn the dials manually rather than running a Bulky Cycle on Hot water if you want to wash them with Hot water. Sometimes you might be able to get a cycle to run outside of the cycle guide settings but more often than not the load sensor just won't be able to figure it out. Instead it will attempt to fill the drum with water, then after a little while shut off all the lights and drain the water out, then switch back to 'wash' and sit there doing nothing until you reset it and try something else (this happened with both the second and third washer). Unfortunately there really aren't too many Washer options at this price-point and they all seem to be basically the same in terms of technology and quality as Maytag is actually also owned by Whirlpool too now. They just don't build these well or to last anymore and since the Auto-sensing for water is mandated they all have it. The machine is super loud anytime it has to sense the load size and weight which it will do multiple times throughout a single cycle. This is also what causes a cycle to take so much longer than old non-autosensing machines. I was determined to have a top loader with an agitator again after the front-loading LG monstrosity I inherited from my home's previous owners died and this was one of the only options that didn't have a flat digital display. I will say that otherwise it seems to wash clothes well. Instead of using fabric softener I run a rinse and spin cycle with a little bit of distilled white vinegar with an extra rinse in the washer and dryer balls in the dryer, and my clothes have been coming out clean and soft. Since the water levels never rise to the same levels the old washers did you have to be careful about how much and what is going into the drum, and I've switched to liquid detergent and using the 1-2 tablespoon measuring guide for liquid laundry detergent instead of pods (and what's listed on the laundry detergent bottle) and use a small amount of vinegar in place of fabric softener. Still working out how to get the towels to come out just as soft.  Other Things to Note: - The water level will never fill the drum more than halfway even on Deep Fill, and you can see how high it goes exactly by looking at the water stain ring that forms in the drum.  - To cancel a cycle/setting, it says you need to hold down the Start button for 3 seconds. It will take more like 5-8 seconds, and it takes a good bit of force so people that have weak arm or hand strength might struggle with this. - To soak your clothes for awhile, you have to wait (and guess, or keep checking and hitting start again as opening the lid will pause the cycle) for the tub to fill then pause the cycle and make sure to leave the lid closed. If the lid is left open it will drain the tub and cancel the cycle after 10 minutes.  - Diagnostic Sequence Order: To access the diagnostic tool that's built into the control board you'll need to: 1. Turn all the knobs/dials so that the notches are pointing upwards (So set to Heavy, Hot, Normal, etc) 2. Turn the cycle dial (which should start at Normal) counter-clockwise once, then clockwise three clicks, counter-clockwise once and then clockwise once. All of the lights except the last one should start blinking.  3. From here you have a few options. You can either turn the dial until only the 'Cycle Complete' light is lit and and press Start once, then turn it left once after all the lights start blinking again to see if it's detected any error codes. If it is detecting any error codes it will light any corresponding cycle lights and flash, and you'll need to look up which code it's putting out and what it means (for example, the Sensing and Fill lights could blink, then Cycle Complete could blink separately, then repeat). If you'd like to try to recalibrate and reset everything to see if that fixes any issues or error codes you're having you can exit and re-enter the diagnostic mode, but instead turn the dial until only the 'Rinse' light is lit. Press start and wait a few minutes for it to run through all its tests and all the lights shut off. From there you can try running a load and see if your issue is resolved. The customer support team I spoke to on the Live Chat feature on the Best Buy website was very supportive and understanding and I didn't have any issues setting up the exchange of the washer both times I had to go through it. 5 Stars for them. The delivery teams that delivered and swapped out all the washers were also very polite and professional. I have a hard time saying either way whether I would recommend this washer, but I hope my review helps save some other customers some sanity if they do purchase.

Return to best practical designs ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    1. love the flat top for folding clothes AND they don’t slide off- (can’t stand the new angled lids where clothes slide off) 2. love the removable agitator for bulky items 3. love the lid - doesn’t slam into cabinets above - (new styled oversized lids hit overhead cabinets)
