Fogerty adds life to some old tunes
John Fogerty tries to stretch some new life out of classic songs that were in their prime when first recorded with CCR. While some of the tunes lend themselves to some nice touches with the hard edge of the Foo Fighters on or Bob Seger on Who'll Stop the Rain, the album starts to lose some edge when the touches of the additional artists start to become fancy covers with little stretch on the other songs. The most creative endeavor with Proud Mary is a novel approach, but loses some of the original fire of the angst of the original cuts by CCR and Ike and Tina that I remember growing up and what turned me onto the song. Fogerty has put together some great songs for his friends, but his friends needed to be able to play a little more. Cover albums always run into the danger of trying to find the balance of respecting the original artist and song and being a tad "too creative" and losing the meaning and feeling of the original song. This album is a nice piece of nostalgia that needs a little "bam" to make it a little more appetizing. It fills you up like a buffet line but is missing the spices.
