Q: Why is this so hideous? And why are the power connectors mid-card?
A: The card/PCB itself is very short, so the power connectors are technically at the end of the card itself. The remaining few inches are all just heatsink and Fan no electronics in there. Not sure why they didn't use some sort of extension, my only guess would be that it would cut into the heatsink or something like that and decrease cooling efficiency.
