Synopsis

2012
Disaster movie maven Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) crafts this apocalyptic sci-fi thriller following the prophecy stated by the ancient Mayan calendar, which says that the world will come to an end on December 21, 2012. When a global cataclysm thrusts the world into chaos, divorced writer and father Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) joins the race to ensure that humankind is not completely wiped out. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Danny Glover, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton, and Oliver Platt round out the cast of this end-of-the-world thriller co-scripted by the director and his 10,000 B.C. writer/composer, Harald Kloser. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

They had all the money, actors and special effects they needed so how did they manage to screw this one up? Obviously they thought exiting moments were more important than developing deeper characters and that's why this story that had great potential stayed so shallow. The dialog was always cheesy and none of the 'hero's' in this film really showed any real emotions nor did they give any of those speeches that give the audience goose bumps. Another thing that really bothered me was that so much was almost going wrong the whole time. Every second of the film had a 'close call' which made the film seem totally unrealistic. Examples are planes taking off just before the runway collapses or driving just fast enough to not get hit by an explosion. This can be very cool if it doesn't happen 100% of the time and I have never seen a movie abusing this way of creating excitement to this extent. So to sum up: If you feel like turning your brain off and watching special effects and big explosions with a very shallow storyline then this movie is for you. But if you feel like watching a movie with a bit of depth then go and see something else.

First, the blu ray is under the control of SONY for the first 30 minutes and you WILL watch the full boring 30 minutes of commercials SONY shoves down your throat. You have NO choice in the matter. Then comes the movie. At about the 1.5 hour point I was soooo bored I checked the package to see just how long the movie was. 2 hours, 38 minutes! And that is after the first 30 minutes of commercial! Wife says "just wait, its almost over". We had another HOUR to go! "We are all going to die" is a theme way overused in this boring flick. We are all going to die! We are all going to die!! The special effects were good but it is hard to enjoy this with all the screaming 'We ARE ALL GOING TO DIE". DVD extras? I could not wait to get that blu ray out of the player to be concerned about extras. What you get is a lot more than what you want.

I just watched this movie on blu ray and all I have to say is wow. I viewed this movie on my 50" plasma with surround sound system consisting of an Onkyo receiver with Klipsch speakers. The movie has good video with exceptional surround sound especially during action scenes. I was particularly amazed by the car scene when the father was rushing to pick up his family so that they could get to the airfiled. I can not stress enough the need to have both good surround sound equipment to go along with a hi def television. Having both will allow the viewer/listener to enjoy the full movie experience as it was intended. At the end of the day thought, this is a great movie to watch with the family or friends. I woul recommend this movie to anyone.

This is a strange movie to talk about in a future, where this movie was supposed to show people how the end of the world could look like in a year 2012. It's an action packed catastrophe movie that is not a bad plot wise, makes sense and it's something that makes you really think (to some extent) but the title is bad... Now watching it, it just makes no sense. When this movie came out, there was this idea that the world really could end in 2012 - planets did align; it's just that the world hasn't ended, so now, it's really hard to take the movie seriously, but that's how it was advertised as. Now, years after, It's still good and funny to watch, as long as we forget it's about year 2012.

a movie with the best special effects ive seen

i saw this movie at the theater and it was probably one of the best movies ive seen so far, as far as special effects and acting goes. dont buy this movie to get educated on the subject of 2012 because there are a lot of things in this movie that are incorrect about december 21st, 2012.. the world isnt just going to explode and its certainly not "the end of time".. if you want to get a little bit educated, and actually be able to understand this mysterious date, than i recommend "2012: science or superstition".. but, i was thrilled when i saw the incredible special effects and the basic story line is good.. its really the special effects that make up the greatness of this movie..

Saw this at the cinema when it came out and thought it was very enjoyable. If you want a deep meaningful film, with oscar winning performances, this is not for you. It's special fx are fantastic and personally Woody harrelson's character is a delight. John Cusack also does well with the traditional cheesey lead role in a disaster movie. There are some cardboard moments from the other actors and the film is a good 2 and a half hours long but if you want throw open your mind to fun ride of disaster, this is it. I will be buying the blu-ray to enjoy the fx at their best.

I really like John Cusack as an actor. While this movie has very good CGI the idea of JC as an action hero doesn't always work for me. So . . . think of him as a Dad who's trying to do the right thing and protect his family in extraordinary circumstances. And it is more plausible. Outside of that one issue, the movie is an interesting take on the end of the world and the few who will survive it. I enjoyed it.
