A good introduction to an amazing early rocker
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Buddy Holly was a remarkable talent. It's unbelievable that he wrote and recorded so many great songs before dying at 22. Every song on The 12 track Best of Buddy Holly CD is terrific. The 26 minute CD hardly captures all of Holly's really good songs, leaving out Peggy Sue Got Married and Crying, Waiting, Hoping(both nicely done in movies by Marshall Crenshaw) and Well All Right, among others. But it gives a good sense of Holly's ability to write and put together a tight, rocking pop song, an ability that clearly influenced the Beatles. Holly, along with Chuck Berry, took the ingredients of early rock and roll and, with crisp, well developed guitar lines, moved it a great distance forward. The sound is, at times, primitive, like the apparent thigh slapping drumming on Everyday. But the innocence of the background vocals and some of the lyrics and singing, masks a tough, savvy performer who innovated and made rock and roll a lot better by helping develop multi-track recording. It's tantalizing and frustrating to think of what Holly could have done if he had survived his plane crash. There are a couple smooth, orchestra backed ballads(True Love Ways and It Doesn't Matter Any More) on the Best of CD. But it seems clear that Holly would have continued to make concise, tough, catchy songs like the ones on the Best of CD.
