Synopsis

Airplane!
This spoof of the Airport series of disaster movies relies on ridiculous sight gags, groan-inducing dialogue, and deadpan acting -- a comedy style that would be imitated for the next 20 years. Airplane! pulls out all the clichés as alcoholic pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays), who's developed a fear of flying due to wartime trauma, boards a jumbo jet in an attempt to woo back his stewardess girlfriend (Julie Hagerty). Food poisoning decimates the passengers and crew, leaving it up to Striker to land the plane, with the help of a glue-sniffing air traffic controller (Lloyd Bridges) and Striker's vengeful former captain (Robert Stack), who must both talk him down. Along the way, we meet a clutch of stock disaster movie passengers like the guitar-strumming nun, a sick little girl, a frightened old lady, and two African-American travelers whose "jive" has to be subtitled. Leslie Nielsen portrays the plane's doctor, launching a new phase of the actor's career that carried him through the next two decades in several similarly comedic roles. The trio of directors Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker, and David Zucker responsible for the film would eventually go on to solo careers, but not before making Top Secret! and Ruthless People. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

I like this movie because it features many really funny scenes and jokes. My favorite parts are when the young girl states that she likes her coffee black and when the airport tower manager states that he picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue. This movie would be rated PG-13 by today's standards, so it may not be suitable for children under 13. There is some brief nudity and probably a half dozen adult-themed references. The group that will get the most out of this will be those aged 30-50, who grew up with the Airport disaster movies and like good sarcasm.

Considered as a satire of Airport '77 and a few other films, this became considered one of the best parodies ever made. With a great cast and some terrific amount of jokes an puns, it's no wonder why fans and critics declare this as one of the funniest parodies. Blu-ray: expecting a crystal-clear quality from this release? Not gonna happen. What it shows though is the best that the studio can remaster, and close to the source material. Extras are a bit sparse, but don't buy it for the extras or any other fancy stuff: buy it for the film! Highly recommended.

The movie speaks for itself so I will focus on the bluray disc itself. I can sum it all up easily in one sentence, "If you own the DVD there is not much gained from the bluray.", the video quality of the bluray does show a hair more detail and better color than the DVD and the audio is only a hair better. Every upgrade from the DVD is subtle and the video transfer could have easily been better but it appears they used an aged transfer that was made for the DVD release.

Who does not love this film? A comedy classic. Cast perfect in their roles. Well written of course with the memorable catch phrases. DVD package. Normal extras on it. Deleted scenes, commentary, trailer, that type of thing BUT IT IS ONE OF THE I HATE THEM SO MUCH FLIP THE LITTLE FLAPS TO OPEN THE CASE. The film that got Leslie Neilson's career into high gear in comedy’s. there would have been no Naked Gun series of films without this film.

A clever, funny parody of 1970 disaster movies with so many jokes packed into each and every scene. The visual and sound effects are even gags. A model plane is used that is so fake it's hilarious and a prop plane sound effect is used even though the plane is obviously a jet. Blu-ray widescreen 1.85:1 aspect ratio, overall sound and picture quality good with some dirt and debris visible, special features included.

Finally received my copy of Airplane after watching the out of stock button on the web page for a month. Every store around me was sold out, and for good reason. Airplane is a classic, and is worthy of Blu-ray. This movie looks great on Blu, even though it has no reason to. The purpose of the movie is to make you laugh (it succeeds), but I was surprised at how new and fresh it looked in High Definition. I can't recommend it enough times over.

"Airplane! The `Don't Call Me Shirley' Edition" manages to combine silliness, puns and with topical humor in a style that recalls something out of an alternate off-kilter universe. Filled with melodramatic, over-the-top music, deliberately bad acting and every cliché about plane disasters you can imagine, "Airplane!" aims wildly and accurately most of the time taking the wind out of the sails of bad (and some good ones, too such as "Jaws")movies everywhere.

    Airplane!

Unfortunately, Airplane! was received by us sliding around loose inside it's case. We didn't open it, and returned it to our local store for a refund. We were unable to get a replacement in-store, as they do not stock this movie. The movie was meant as a Christmas gift, and since we would be unable to order another in time for gift-giving, we purchased a different movie in-store.
