Ali [DVD] [2001]

The life story of boxing legend Muhammad Ali comes to vivid life in director Michael Mann's Ali. Columbia has done a fantastic job on this 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The images in this picture feature finely detailed colors, solid black levels, and natural flesh tones throughout. No imperfections of any kind were spotted anywhere in this transfer. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and French. This soundtrack works very well in the confines of the film. There are many instances of directional effects through both the front and rear speakers with the bass coming in heavy and aggressive. No distortion is heard during any of the dialogue, effects, or music. Also included on this disc are subtitles in French, English, and Spanish. Sadly, this DVD edition of Ali is completely lacking when it comes to special features -- the only supplements available on this disc include a theatrical trailer for Ali and bonus trailers for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and the sequel Men in Black 2. Fans will certainly be hoping for a better DVD down the line, but until then it looks like any special edition of Ali is down for the count.

    Synopsis

    Ali
Notoriously obsessive director Michael Mann and star Will Smith devoted nearly two years and over 100 million dollars from the coffers of Columbia Pictures and other financiers to creating this biography of boxing great Muhammad Ali, which focuses on the ten-year period of 1964-1974. In that time, the brash, motor-mouthed athlete quickly dominates his sport, meets and marries his first wife (Jada Pinkett-Smith), converts to Islam (changing his name from Cassius Clay), and defies the United States government by refusing to submit to military conscription for duty in Vietnam. His world heavyweight champion title thus stripped from him entirely for political reasons, the champ sets about to win back his crown, culminating in a legendary unification bout against George Foreman (Charles Shufford) in Zaire, dubbed the "Rumble in the Jungle." In his travels, Ali becomes a symbol of power to disenfranchised African-Americans everywhere and meets such luminaries as Malcolm X (Mario Van Peebles), Martin Luther King Jr. (LeVar Burton) and Maya Angelou (Martha Edgerton). Ali features an all-star supporting cast that includes Jon Voight, Giancarlo Esposito, Jamie Foxx, Nona Gaye, Michael Michele, Joe Morton, Paul Rodriguez, Ron Silver, Mykelti Williamson, and Jeffrey Wright. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

A great movie featuring one of Will Smith's best performances. After screening this for friends on DVD for years it's good to finally have something to present in a larger screen in 1080p! Good: quality and sound, the opening of this film is one of the greatest openings of motion picture in several decades. Check out how long it takes to get to dialogue. The characters are introduced to Sam Cooke and the montages are perfect. The Columbia lady brand running backwards is a nice touch. Con: Commemorative edition seems to have added footage that is good for historical purposes, but deflates the story and stalls in parts. I would have preferred to have both versions available on the disc. I feel that the 2001 cut is the best. The tie in of Ali to Malcolm X feels at times like it focuses too much on the politics and not enough on Ali. What I loved so much about the first one is that here was a man who wasn't perfect but stood for what he believed in no matter what, a principled man and that is lost sometimes in the 2016 version. If you are watching this now, also check out the documentary "When we were kings"

I saw Ali in the theatres when it was released Christmas 2001, and it still holds up as a nuanced portrait of one of America's most indelible 20th-Century figures. The eclectic cast is great, with Will Smith carrying the dramatic heft as the Champ. Mario Van Peebles, Jaime Foxx, Jeffrey Wright, and Ron Silver are fantastic in the ensemble as well. Although not Michael Mann's best film, it's indicitave of how he pursues unformulaic choices to inform his narratives. I don't believe the film's ever received the recognition it deserves, which is a shame. The blu-ray itself has a nice, recut transfer of the film. The 'film' footage looks fantastic, as the digital footage maintains the 'noisy' appearance Mann aficionados are sure accustomed to by now. Light on extras, the footage of Ali with the filmmakers and Smith is a great watch, especially in light of Ali's passing.

For the first time, Michael Mann's Ali comes to blu-ray. It includes one new special feature and the director's cut of the film. Note: the director's cut is a substantial revision adding and removing scenes from the theatrical cut. Included as well is a Ultraviolet code for the theatrical version of the film. The quality of the video is mixed with some scenes benefiting greatly from 1080p while other appear soft. Some of this is due to the use of footage from early digital cameras mixed in with film. Overall, this is a good disc that may have a better transfer in the future but as of now is good enough for the right price.

Synopsis: Muhammad Ali thrilled the world as the wildly outrageous heavyweight champion. At the same time, he did battle with a political establishment aggressively opposed to his political positions while he was grappling with a tumultuous romantic life. Filmmaker Michael Mann evokes Ali in his fullest human dimension in this new cut. Experience the epic drama from Academy Award nominees Will Smith (Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness) and director, writer, producer Michael Mann (The Insider, The Aviator) on Blu-ray for the first time.

Michael Mann always tweaks and messes with his movies after their initial release. I have never seen the theatrical so I can't compare it to that. The movie itself is really interesting to start. It seems like it is really going to be about Ali's political positions throughout but then it turns more towards the generic boxing movie tropes. But it is still really good film that inspired me to look at all the events that were either shortened or left out of the film.

I've been waiting for this film to release on bluray for the last 10 years, and alas, its finally arrived. Definitely Will Smith's most defining work, and another gem from writer/producer/director, Michael Mann. Pick it up while supplies last.

This is yet another recut for Michael Mann. To me it seems he either won't utilize seamless branching for more than one cut for his films so the viewer can choose to view which cut they want to see. They'd have to import the German release to get the film in HD with the Theatrical Cut. Still decent and worth it for the price.

Almost forgot how riveting Will is as an actor! Beautiful rendering of the late great champ, the film focuses on more than just boxing. The life of the champ. Pq was sensational as was aq. Not much surround usage but vocals and bass were great!
