Video tests consisted of repeated playback of a 2-hour, 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store.

Internet tests were conducted over 3G, LTE, and Wi-Fi networks using a dedicated web server, browsing snapshot versions of 20 popular web pages, and receiving mail once an hour.

Talk-time tests were conducted by placing a cellular phone call.

All settings were default except: Bluetooth was paired with headphones; Wi-Fi was associated with a network for all but the Internet 3G and Internet LTE tests; the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks and Auto-Brightness were turned off.

All battery claims depend on network configuration and many other factors; actual results will vary.

I was skeptical at first, but after using this for a couple weeks, it turned out to be a solid device. I have heard many people opine the device's design and lack of usual Apple flair, and I have to agree, the design is somewhat obtuse. However, from a practical standpoint, I have come to appreciate it. Before I tried this device, I used Mophie's popular Juicepack Air. However, I did not care for the extra bulk the Mophie added. When I started using this case from Apple, I immediately preferred its ergonomics. Let me explain. In the middle of the device, you can definitely see that it matches the thickness of the Mophie Juicepack Air. However, the "ungainly" hump on Apple's case is nice from an ergonomic standpoint, as the battery bulge and extra thickness does not cover the entire back of the device. Instead, the top, bottom and edges of the back are pretty close to the thickness of a regular rubber case. So at least for me, when holding my phone with the Apple case in my hand, I preferred how easy it was to grip the bottom and sides compared to the all around thickness of the Mophie unit. As far as weight, I found the Mophie and this case to feel similar in the hand as far as heft, and quick acclimated to both. As for performance, this case definitely differs from the Mophie case mentioned above in a few key areas. First, overall capacity is pretty similar, with both cases extending your phone almost a full charge. Whereas the Mophie case can be turned on and off at will with its power button, this Apple case works automatically. So essentially, after plugging in overnight, when I take my phone off the charger, the case will discharge slowly, keeping the phone at 100%. Once the case discharges, you still have 100% phone battery left that then is used by the phone. The only way to know the battery charge status of the case while in use is to look on your iPhone's battery status indicator. However, if you are charging the case by itself, without the phone inserted, there is a status indicator on the inside of the case. So if you like having the option to decide when the case turns on and off, this is not the case for you. However, if you prefer just to unplug and go, without worrying about having to press a separate power button for your case, this one is for you! A couple other notes. In my use so far, I have not felt the Apple case get overly warm at all while charging the phone. When using the Mophie case, there was a noticeable increase in warmth, though never dangerous or concerning. Just something to think about. Additionally, this case uses the same lightning cable as the iPhone and has pass through charging, so it will charge your phone first. If you go with a battery pack other than Apple's, you will most likely need to charge with a micro USB cable, so something to keep in mind. In the end, as I mentioned at the start, I prefer the ease of use and ergonomics of this device over the Mophie Juicepack Air. I love the idea of never having to run out of battery during the day, no matter how much I use my phone. For me, this case was definitely worth the investment.

Only a year in, and my iPhone 7 is experiencing dramatically lower battery life than when it began. So I went on the hunt for a battery case that would reliably save the day for my phone. I've tried two (and returned two) other brands of battery cases for this, one was a high-rated case from Amazon, the other was from a suspicious and possibly a tad fraudulent company called PowerPlusCases. Both were of somewhat cheap make, and the PowerPlusCases battery, while containg 5500mAh of power, tended to overheat quickly. I didn't necessarily want to turn back to Apple (we have trust issues these days), and there are many low reviews for this pricey case, but when I found it in store for $84 I thought I may as well give it a shot. I don't mind the shape, and the hinge design makes removing the iPhone easy and safe, and so far I haven't experienced any crazy amount of dust collecting or peeling for the silicone/grippy texture, as some other users have. The major problem at first was getting it to accept a charge from off-brand cheap cables, so buyers please be aware, you may experience difficulty charging this case unless you purchase Apple Certified quality lighting cables and adapters. Once that was sorted, charging both my phone and the case to full capacity separately was the best way to begin the synchronization without any crazy disconnects/reconnects. Once both were fully charged, I was then able to begin using it seamlessly. It keeps my iPhone at 100% until it's drained, and I can keep an eye on its battery life in realtime because the iPhone recognizes it as an official accessory. That's nifty. Overall, my phone lasts at least twice as long, I don't know exactly how much mAh it puts out, but it does it's job without overheating, and it recharges every night (phone first, then case) without any fuss. TL;DR I am actually liking the "Smart" aspect of this case, 1 month in, it works well and seems reliable. I am hoping it will hold up it's track record, for its price I expect to be getting at least a solid year out of it. We'll see.

I had been putting off getting this case for my iPhone 7 for over a year. Disappointed with the battery life of the 7 (after deciding that the 6 Plus was just too big for my smallish hand) I felt that I needed to do something drastic to avoid having to charge my dwindling battery numerous times a day. Apple Watch's constant bluetooth connectivity and a shameless Pokemon Go addiction are the likely culprits for this exorbitant energy expenditure. I waited long enough to buy the case that I found myself in an iPhone 8 before finally breaking down. I guess I had hoped that Apple would be doing something miraculous to extend the battery life of this next gen iPhone, but as you can see from the fact that I finally bought this case, the battery life is sorely lacking. This case is velvety smooth, shock absorbing rubber to the touch. It's a little heavy, but it's still pretty sleek despite the "bump". The rubber stays put on surfaces, which is a nice thing to have protecting your big dollar iPhone from gliding off into Apple Care repair land. The battery case comes complete with an elegant charging process and the overall Apple wonderfulness is featured. When you charge your phone in the case the phone charges first and then the case charges. Conversely, during use, the case depletes first and then the phone runs down on battery. The iPhone tells you what's going on with the battery on the case and the battery on the phone at the same time. It's pretty wonderful. I just wish that I did not need to get a secondary device to extend the battery life of my ridiculously expensive new iPhone, but that is not the fault of the device I am reviewing, so I will save that story for another day. The fit is perfect, just as one would expect from an Apple product. The price was discounted (thanks, Best Buy and eBates rewards) but it was not nearly cheap enough!

I've purchased the white smart battery-case for iPhone 7. The apple smart battery works fairly well, as a battery-pack. However, as a case isn't as intuitive, or has the quality you will expect from an Apple pruduct. The case is a disappointment; the silicon surface absorbed colors from fabric and dirt from the surroundings. Additionally, it started chipping in the corners (chunks of silicon material fell off), at least mine did within two weeks of use. Best Buy, will not exchange it, since the purchase took place over 14 days. I was told to deal with Apple directly. When you spend $100 you expect better quality and service. Positives: good backup-battery pack, works and fits well, it has a nice feel, and it's fairly light Negatives: case chips easily, discoloration, the white case easily absorbs colors and dirt from the environment, expensive, poor support/service from Bestbuy and Apple.

I know there are a ton of third-party battery cases at all different price points for the line of Apple iPhones. I like the Apple smart battery case because it’s soft and protective and easy to put on and take off. No matter how rough you are its almost impossible to scratch your phone with this soft case. I have purchased many different cases for all of the iPhones I owned over the years, but this one is the best because of its smooth and slim build. I hear a lot of people don’t like it because the back protrudes out but it is not that bad. The only complaint I have about it is I wish the battery was a slightly higher amount like some of the third-party cases out there. You can see the status of the battery in the notifications center it does have a light but it is very small when charging the case without the iPhone. There is no power button on the case. One last point is the Apple smart battery case hardly ever got hot compared to a third-party case I had brought off of eBay which did get very hot if even in a pocket for a few minutes.

I needed an extended battery for my iPhone 7 - and the other options, while extending the battery, dropped 1-2 bars from my reception. I live in a fringe area, so that wasn't going to work. I took a shot at the apple case, and I am pleasantly surprised. It's bulky, but still smaller than its competitors. The case integrates with the phones battery meters (so I can see the charge in the home screen widgets), and it has a lightning port (awesome) for charging. No carrying two separate cables. The case works as advertised. I rely on the case battery from wake up until about 3:00 pm, then the phone's battery kicks in and takes me through the rest of the day. The case is bulky, but thin enough to comfortably keep my phone in my front pocket. The only drawback I have is the cost. I got the case on sale for $90, but it retails for $100. Still, for a case that works and works well, it was worth the cost for me.

This battery did not keep my phone charged for more than 6 hours. If I do not use my phone, it would keep it charged for 12 hours. I purchased this battery to make sure my phone did not die during my marathon and I lose my data. The instructions for the battery pack said it would last for 24 hours when phone is not in use, and 22 hours when listening to music. This battery did NOT meet or exceed the time limit given. After 6 hours of using the garmin app and NOT listening to music, the battery was at 17%. This was after both phone and battery was charged at 100%. I ONLY use Apple products for my phone, so this way I know my phone is fully charged and not showing 100% when it’s not because of the use of third party products. For the price, I was very disappointed with this product.

Overall a good case from Apple, nothing major, overpriced but again, it's an Apple product. I am almost certain that for a regular person it can last 24 hours but for a person like me who's constantly on his phone it's about 12 hours, it's considered a smart case because the case drains it's juice first and then your phone gets drained next, you cannot pick between the two but a perk is you don't need an extra connection as it charges via a lighting cable on or off the phone. Looks nice over the phone although a little bulky and makes your phone a little heavier but there's a big Apple logo on the back for those who like the little details, soft felt interior with an led indicator for when the case is fully charged, if charging separately, if not your iPhone automatically detects it upon connection and adds a widget that tells you the percentage, loved the case at first but now it's just another accessory.
