    Synopsis

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
The young protégé of one of the world's greatest superheroes has his first encounter with an old nemesis in this direct-to-video feature adapted from the popular animated series Batman Beyond. Terry McGinnis (Will Friedle) has taken over the crime-fighting responsibilities of Batman from aging Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy), but while Terry has learned a great deal from Wayne, he's never heard the startling truth about Batman's final encounter with his arch-enemy, The Joker (Mark Hamill). However, when The Joker returns to Gotham City as vicious as ever, Wayne decides that it's time that the new Batman learned all there is to know about the green-faced terror before he can bring the city to its knees -- especially after Bruce is attacked by his one-time rival. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker also features the voice talents of Melissa Joan Hart and Angie Harmon. Upon its initial release, the movie sparked some controversy among Batman Beyond fans because of last-minute edits that toned down the violence level. However, it was eventually released on DVD in an uncut format. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The Movie It was Meant to Be

Based on the preceeding tv show, this is the version that the creators originally meant this film to be. This dvd features a restored version of the film, and features many scenes that were altered from the first version. It also includes many scenes that were deleted altogether. If you compare this to the original version, you'll realize how different this film is without these crucial scenes. Having these scenes put back into the film makes this a better movie, as it makes the characters and events in the movie more consistent. Some critics say it's a little dark, but it's really not. It fits perfectly with the tv show, and makes a great finale to the series. The commentary on the dvd is done by the same animation team who love to put a lot of inside jokes into the film, and just know how to have a lot of fun with this project. If you are a Batman fan and want a true version of this movie, the un-cut version is a must have.

Usually, the DC animated films just aren't very good. It is not that they are terrible and unenjoyable, but they just aren't good quality films. That is not the case with a select few that are outstanding, which is the case with this film. It has good pacing, the story structure is good, it keeps you guessing, the animation is good (clean and crisp), the voice acting is awesome (can't go wrong with Hamill and Conroy) and it is really an entertaining film. I would warn parents that just because this is an animated film, it is not totally innocent. It has an adult feeling to it. With that said, it is nowhere near as adult and dark as some of the other DC animated films, but it is just a word of caution that this may be a little much for children under 5-6 years-old.

Batman Beyond was one of the best cartoons on TV when I was growing up. Return of the Joker was a very well-done movie with an interesting plot and fantastic voice acting. In this movie, someone claiming to be the original Joker makes a dramatic appearance, but Bruce Wayne, the original Batman, says that the Joker is dead. Wayne Manor is attacked while Terry is away, and Bruce is hospitalized. Terry must do his research and solve the mystery of this so-called original Joker, but who is it? Only time will tell... Also, Terry has an awesome maniacal laugh.

One of the best Batman movies

Even though this takes place in the Batman Beyond world (can't hold it against them...) this is one of the best Batman movies, yes much better than Batman and Robin. It is also somewhat disturbing and the perfect example of what the Joker truly is... a homicidal maniac. The story is great and has a good twist that I didn't see coming. Adults shouldn't waste their time on the cut up version, this one is MUCH better. Although, maybe the kiddies should stick with the cut up one. A must-own, works well with getting to know the Joker with The Dark Knight coming out.

Probably the best Batman animated movie out. The overall look and feel to this movie was great, and you get the return of the greatest villain ever with, The Joker. There's a secret behind his return, and he knows a lot more than he ever let on previously. He's still as sick as he previously was, if not more, but you can't help but smile everytime he's on screen. It was great to hear all the original voices back for this movie and it makes it feel that much better. Plus, nobody can make the Joker sound better than Mark Hamill. So if you're a big Batman fan, this is definately a must have. If you're not, than this may very well make you a Batman fan.

The packaging is simple, just a Blu-Ray in a case, but what's on the Blu-Ray is where it's at. If you are an old school Batman the animated series fan, this is a MUST watch. Kevin Conroy continues to voice Batman/Bruce old Wayne in a series that was not taken in that well...There are also other voice actors that come back from the original series, that give this movie a refreshing and familiar sound. It was definitely a treat to hear a few characters back in animated uniform! Batman Beyond wasn't that great, but this movie definitely did the series justice.

This exciting animated film takes the cyberpunk world of "Batman Beyond" into overdrive, finally delivering the return of Mark Hamill's landmark Joker in a shocking and memorable ending to the decades-long battle between the Caped Crusader and his archnemesis. The pacing and action, voice acting, writing and plot execution - it's all done masterfully and in a way that will leave you wanting more long after the credits roll.

Batman Beyond is my favorite version of batman and other than the short lived tv show, there hasn't been much set in that universe. I was glad to see a film with this new Batman be feature length and stay true to the cartoon. I enjoyed it and if you are a fan of the animated series, you will like the extended stay with this new Gotham.
