Bauhaus: Gotham [DVD] [1998]

This is a fun DVD for anyone who has never been to a Bauhaus concert or simply wants to relive (in an "undead" way) the experience. This is another one of those now popular, virtual-concert-going experience home videos. The sound is quite good, if limited somewhat by the fact that the audience is a bit too loud in the mix, especially during "She's in Parties" and "Bela Lugosi's Dead." If the drums lack a bit of oomph, it' not the fault of the DVD, but of the original recording. For such a dark theatrical set design, the DVD does a fine job displaying the performance with clarity. There is no apparent grain or fogginess, which is especially important since the transfer is from video to DVD and not film to DVD. The only grain to be found is the result of an overzealous person working the visual effects box. The minimalist presentation of the concert, with almost everything purely black and white, didn't need the spooky after-effects. The German Expressionism backdrop is effectively portrayed, making the clean transfer readily apparent. As a documentation of a live concert performance (with a couple of funny "interview" scenes thrown-in), this is no Stop Making Sense, but it never tries to be. However, it is an extreme treat for Bauhaus fans and a fine addition to any DVD library lacking in glam goth concert performances.

Synopsis

Bauhaus: Gotham
Widely viewed as a prototypical band who would help form the image of post-punk goth rockers including the Cure and Joy Division, Bauhaus has certainly established itself as worthy of a place for themselves in rock history. Though they broke up 1987, the band reunited for a brief tour a year later. In addition to being the first ever DVD release from Bauhaus and Metropolis Records, Bauhaus: Gotham includes footage from live performances originally filmed during September at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. Some of the featured songs include "Kick in the Eye," "She's in Parties," and "Bela Lugosi's Dead." ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi
