This DVD is as close a study of youth cultural phenomenology in America as any exploration has ventured previously. While other writers and directors are focusing on diaspora and it's effects in our ethnoscape, Mike Judge take the opposite approach and looks inward into the distilled and isolated American cultural landscape. Where some viewers see a series of unintelligible grunts from Beavis as a signifier for his stupidity, the astute viewer recognizes these ancient Vedic mantras as a form of his spiritual transformation. He is both fully cognizant but yet completely unaware of his surroundings. Mike Judge often employs semiotics as a boilerplate for his comedic adventures. In Beavis and Bu++head Do America film, the two characters are paid to "do" in a man's ex wife. Only they mistake the denotata of "do" in this context. Judge employs the role of context later in the movie when they are on a bus full of nuns and they exclaim "We're on a bus with chicks!" they are both cognizant of their situation but yet unable to view past the physical veils directly in front them. They decontextualize the female from any sort of religious frame and view them from a strictly singular viewpoint based on man's most inner desires. In that brief statement, they ask, "Can we ever escape the context of religion in the future and likewise can we ever escape our evolutionary animalistic heritage?" Brilliant and fascinating.

Yeah really. This show rules. You should buy it. (But seriously, this is a great show about two slackers in a world a lot smarter than they are. Mike Judge made a great show)
