Synopsis

Black Christmas
Although this Canadian production saw its widest U.S. cable TV distribution in the early '80s (primarily under the title Stranger in the House) to capitalize on the phenomenal success of Halloween and its offspring, this effective suspense-thriller actually predates John Carpenter's film by four years. The story involves a dangerous psychopath hiding out in the attic of a sorority house who torments a small group of pretty young sisters (including Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder) who are staying behind over Christmas break. His tactics range from making obscene phone calls from their house-mother's phone, to stalking the terrified boarders with sharp objects and murderous intent. Director Bob Clark, who mistook dreariness for tension in his previous horror effort Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things! (1972), here demonstrates a tight, aggressive style that generates some very original shocks -- particularly the surprise ending -- which clearly influenced dozens of similarly-themed slasher films to follow. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

I first discovered black christmas the last 90s early 2000s at a local video store and after the ending it stayed with me for awhile. it was that chilling. since i have owned a few copies here and there, even met actor Keir Dullea who played Olivia Hussey's boyfriend peter. nice guy. but when i heard it was coming to blu ray i had to buy it. the late Bob Clark (A Christmas Story, Porky's) directed this atmospheric candian chiller and features a great cast that went on to become famous in their own right. Keir dullea was already well known for 2001 a space odesy, olivia hussey had done romeo and juliette, margot kidder went on to play lois lane in the original superman movies, and andrea martin became a comedian and starred on the candian sketch comedy show SCTV with eugeen levy, john candy, catherine o hare and more. the film builds the suspense very slowly but from the very start your already sucked in. theres some great comedic moments and some very dark moments but the film never strays from its core. the ending is very powerful and chilling as i said and is a must watch for anyone interested in seeing a christmas movie with a scary dark theme.

    "Creepy Horror"

This is a perfect example of good old creepy horror film. Made 4 years before "Halloween", one cant help but think maybe this might be the missing link between "Psycho" and "Halloween". It has all the things needed to be a slasher flick, mysterious killer, big old house, pretty girls, and of course plenty of sharp objects. It's a great movie to have if your a true horror fan and the fact that it's Christmas almost seems like a coincidence, atleast in this movie. And is also jam-packed with lots of special features with plenty of interviews and recently uncovered scenes. I bought this movie around the time it came out and am still enjoying it. Also this might come as a surprise but the director of this film, Bob Clark, was also the writter and director of "A Christmas Story".

There is a reason why Black Christmas has lasted so long. It predates Halloween and Friday the 13th by several years as it is an early inspiration for the later rise of "slasher" films. It uses innovative camera tricks and gives us the killer's POV. And it takes the sacred holiday of Christmas and interjects it with real-life morality conflicts of its characters. The transfer on this edition is great, and is coupled with some great features. A 20-minute candid interview with Margot Kidder stands out. Also, a documentary featuring remembrances from the cast and crew is quite informative. Top it off with a new 5.1 mix, and you have a nice blu-ray bundle. Great to add to your collection!

    Surprisingly Really Good

I didn't expect this to be decent. I didn't know what to think about it. But i sat down and watched it and wonder how this movie is not well known. It is a very creepy movie that effects you. The movie also has some pretty funny parts in it but all in all very disturbing. If you are into movies like Friday the 13th or Halloween then defiantly give this one a watch. If you are into movies like Saw and Hostel then this isn't the movie for you. Its somewhat slow and has not that much blood content.

The first time I watched this movie years ago, I had no clue what the movie was about. I was amazed at the quality of the scariness of the movie, it had me on edge until the very end. Years later I noticed a lot of firsts while watching this 1974 movie. It is so well done and the characters are likable, I make watching this movie a tradition in my family. Excellent transfer from the Blu-Ray released years ago.

There isn't much that can be said about this film that hasn't been said before, so just buy it. Great slasher film, which some say inspired John Carpenter's Halloween. Definitely deserves 5 star, not 1 star because someone thought this was the dreadful 2006 remake (it does clearly say this is the original version).

This is my personal favorite slasher flicks I feel it beats Halloween, Friday the 13th, Terror Train etc. It did 1st person kills four years before Halloween and it has the best cinematography I've ever seen in a slasher flick. The film is not only superbly made it is extremely scary! The entire film I was shaking and on the edge of my seat. Any true horror fan must check this film out.
