A step up from the ordinary point and shoot camera
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am an owner of a Nikon DSLR, it is an older version as I have had it for over 10 years. I also have a Fuji point and shoot for a few years. Now I have added the Cannon PowerShot G16. I consider myself an amateur when it come to photography as I have belonged to a camera club and am still learning about photography. So onto the review: Pros: Better than a basic point & shoot shutter speed, Macro shooting, eye viewfinder and screen viewfinder, dial exposure control on camera, multiple shooting modes, hot shoe for mountable flash, wifi connectivity, size. Cons: battery life, no physical manual (its online, which is also a pro), zoom distance. I am still learning about the features of the camera but so far love the step up from the basic point and shoot. I love, love, love that there is a dial on the camera body for exposure! I tend to shoot in program mode a lot, and having this at the fingertips is a huge plus for me. I can keep the object in view while changing the exposure, I don't like having to go into menus to find something to change on the fly! I do a lot of close up photography and am pleased with the results. The battery life is my only disappointment so far, I bought a spare when I bought the camera and am glad I did. The batteries are inexpensive and before I go on vacation will probably buy another. I wish the camera had a longer zoom but I suppose I have my DSLR for that. I would highly recommend this camera as an advanced point and shoot for those that have worked with DSLRs and want the advance features that this camera provides. I did upload 2 photos; 1-amusement park ride of the spinning ride, I was impressed that the camera caught the faces with no blurring as I could not detect when my family would be in view. I just kept shooting and hoping for the best, 2-a peony close up of the center that was shot in program mode so that I could adjust the exposure meter so that the flower highlights would not be blown out. Like I said earlier I am pleased with the camera. It is a little bigger than the average point and shoots out there, but definitely manageable compared to the heavy DSLR that I also have. It is definitely a keeper!

Another fine Canon G-Series camera
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Having owned G-Series cameras since 2008, it is not surprising how much I love the G16. I began with the G9 all over Italy. The results were fantastic. I was the only one on the tour able to photograph the Pieta in the Vatican without a flash bounce. I sold that unit for more than I paid for it. It wasn't long til I realized I had made a mistake. I purchased the G10 and liked it even better. Took it to Belgium, France, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece and Turkey. Last year I took it to the Caribbean. This year, I bought the G16 and took it to the Grand Cayman. It performs even better than the G10 which I love dearly. It has WIFI and many more fine attributes. I also have a Canon 60D but I carry this unit 90% of the time as it is so much lighter and does such a great job. It looks so much like my G10, my wife has no idea I have a new camera. Grab it before it disappears. You won't be disappointed.

I Love It
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had a G series camera since my first G9 in 2008. I took it to Italy and produced some outstanding shots. I bought a G10 the next year and took it to Belgium, France, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Turkey and Greece. Last year we took it to the Virgin Islands and this year to The Cayman. It has always performed flawlessly. This year I bought the G16 and it is EVEN BETTER. It does things that the big SLR's do for much less in price. It is the first G series worth getting since the G10. It is well built, tough and ready to go. Just got back from Florida and here is a sunset photo I took with the G16.

A Canon G16 is a very good upgrade in the G series
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Canon G16 is very easy to use.The features are basically the same as the Canon G9.New HDR in Camera feature is very good. The taking of night photos is also very good and you may realize some stunning pictures. Easy to download to your computer and to start your digital darkroom.

Great all-around or travel camera
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the best small camera I've ever used at anywhere near this price-point. It's a little larger and heavier than some but the extra weight is worth it for a real optical viewfinder and fast 1:1.8-2.8 lens. If you are intimidated with camera settings just put it in auto mode. The 5X zoom is enough for pretty much anything other than long distance wildlife photography. You can take indoor shots with available light or pop up the flash to fill in the faces. The camera has an uncanny ability to use just enough flash to fill in the shadows and produce good skin tone with minimal chance of red-eye. For the more technically inclined it has fully manual operation and even a hot shoe. Don't let the relatively small 12.8 Megapixel sensor put you off. It's more than enough for great enlargements. My wife carries one of these in her purse all the time and some of our best family photos have come from it. Highly recommended.

Great alternative to full body DSLR
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was considering a full body Canon DSLR when I started looking for a new camera. After some hands on shopping though, I realized I'd want a more compact and lightweight package. Primarily, I wanted a camera I could take anywhere quickly, but still have all the features and controls of a full DSLR. It also had to be something my wife could just point and shoot and get decent results from. We looked at some Compact System Cameras, which are marvelously capable (large sensor size, fast lenses, great shutter response time and continuous shooting speed), but a bit pricy, and still too bulky for a pocket. After scouring the various "best camera to do X" pages on the Internet, I came across this gem. And it truly is a wonder of compromise and ability. One site reviewer claimed he was almost unable to take a bad shot with it, and that is an accurate measure of this camera. It's got a foolproof Auto mode, is light enough that it doesn't cause my wife any problems to hold (she's suffers arthritis, so weight is critical), and still gives me all the on-body controls I want to be able to adapt settings to rapidly changing conditions, or quickly try different techniques to difficult shots. It shoots pretty good 1080p video, with good sound and a sharp image. All this, and still fits in my pocket (cargo preferred, but loose jeans work too). And, critically, still provides a viewfinder, so no more shooting blind at the beach with the sun on the screen. It's also a great battery extender since its optical not electronic. Battery life is great anyway, but having the option to turn off the display and get another couple hundred or more shots is priceless if there's not a spare battery handy. I've had it a month now, and still keep marveling at its abilities and discovering cool features. It has a Star mode that makes taking pictures of the night sky a whole new adventure. I've fallen in love with photography all over again after years of living with only what stuffs in a pocket and chases the kids from activity to activity. My only possible complaint is the limited zoom range. It's only 5x optical, with two different digital zoom ranges that take it up to 10x. The digital zoom is quite nice compared to my experience with other point and shoot cameras, still providing a good quality image, but still not the sharpness a full optical zoom would be. On the plus side, this camera provides a bayonet mounting ring to allow for accessory lenses and filters. I highly recommend this camera to anyone wanting to have a full feature camera with great image quality (it's not all about megapixels) and still fool-proof point and shoot ease. Its a great camera at its price.

Excellent, cost effective enthusiast camera
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Prior to taking a recent trip, I decided that I needed to upgrade my camera. I wanted a mix of attributes: a viewfinder of some kind, manual overrides, extremely high image quality, and a small enough size to encourage me to actually take the camera everywhere with me. My prior "best" camera is a Samsung GX-1L DSLR. A great camera for its time, but I was increasingly tired of the weight and size of an SLR. My point and shoot was a Canon A1200, with an image sensor about the equal of a smartphone, and cr*p results under available light. (It was an $80 camera, so I'm not complaining... it is what it is.) The warehouse clubs (Sams, Costco) were both running current promotions on Canon DSLR and Nikon DSLR outfits (camera + normal lens + telephoto lens + case) for under $500. But I decided against another DSLR. The weight and size are killers, and I would simply not take a DSLR on many expeditions. I looked at reviews of many current high end point and shoots and mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Fuji has several compelling choices in the $5-800 range. But I kept coming back to the Canon G16 for its range of features, its simplicity, its bright and high quality optical viewfinder, and its classic looks that echo a vintage Rollei 35 or rangefinder of the 70. I had a Best Buy gift card from last Christmas to burn, I was getting too close to my departure date to order anything online, so I went with the in stock G16 at the local Best Buy. WOW. All I can say is that the G16 is "uber camera" to me. Its imaging range is tremendous. I have actually taken sharp handheld shots of stars in the sky with this thing, as well as nighttime outdoor scenes. The video recording quality is superb and playback looks awesome on a full size TV. The electronic flash recovery time is quite fast. The image noise and grain is well in control even at 3200 ISO and above. The battery life of the supplied rechargeable is admirable. As long as this gem of a camera lasts and doesn't develop problems, I'm a happy photog camper.

Excellent camera
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is probably one of the best point and shoot cameras in this price range. It is not too big so you can carry it anywhere and yet it has some features that exist only on pricier DSLR cameras. It creates excellent pictures in any ambient, dark or light, sun or clouds. It has plenty of manual settings, but the auto settings are so good you will barely ever need to use manual settings. Comparing to my prevous camera, this one is so much better and I don't remember creating a bad picture or movie. I would recommend this camera to anyone. For beginners because it has auto mode which gives excellent pictures in any environment, and for professionals because it has plenty of manual settings and it is portable.

Q: QuestionDoes this camera come with an optical viewfinder?
Asked by James451.
- A:Answer Yes it does which, as an older user, I use about half the time. It also has a diopter focusing adjustment to fine tune it to your eye. When you have the zoom fully extended, you can see the barrel in the viewfinder. No big deal.

Q: Questiontransefering images via cableThis camera doesn't come with a cable which fits to my Mac. Could you please suggest what cable I need to buy ? I do not prefer to send images via wifi to Canon Image gateway. Thanks for responce
Asked by sisi.
- A:Answer Same issue with a PC, no mini-USB to USB cable included. I already had one laying around, but the driver to attach the camera depends on handing it off to a cloud before I get to see the pictures. Bad Canon! Naughty, naughty Canon! My pictures, not yours. Hands off and keep out! The Image Gateway is not part of the wifi solution on my iPad and Android phone - the Canon Camera Connect app communicates directly to the camera on the local network when the camera is in Wifi mode, and has worked great for getting pictures from the camera to those devices. I havent been able to get the Windows version of Camera Connect to work, however. It keeps losing connection with the camera and won't retry without restarting windows, and then fails again. I just pull the SD card out and pop that into the slot included in just about all modern PCs and laptops. If you can afford this camera, and a Mac, then an SD card adapter is cheap cheap cheap, really.

Q: Questiondoes the G16 come with a memory card, battery and battery charger?
Asked by s.bug.
- A:Answer Comes with a memory card with very small amount of storage. I got a memory card with more storage separately It does come with battery and battery charger. I did purchase an extra battery just in case.

Q: QuestionLens coating easily scratchedHas Canon fixed the problem with the lens coating being easily scratched?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer Not a problem for me. My small belt case is rigid over the lense area yo protect the lense assembly. If lense cover blades are struck I imagine they could come in contact with the lense. Lense filters help prevent scratches but is not provided for on the G16. So I take precautions.

Q: QuestionNOT being cold resistantWhat are the specifics of NOT being cold resistant? What temperature is used? How would a person keep this camera warm enough to use?
Asked by Yo.
- A:Answer Taking a warm camera from inside to a cold environment is an issue for all cameras especially with high humidity. It's physics. Alloy the camera to acclimate to the conditions. Also happens with lenses on eye glasses. They both can fog up. I put my camera in a coat pocket but this still requires time for temp to settle out.
