Synopsis

Dazed and Confused
Like George Lucas' American Graffiti, Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused is an affectionate look at the youth culture of a bygone era. While Lucas took aim at the conservative 1950s, Linklater jumps ahead a generation to the bicentennial year of 1976 to celebrate the joys of beer blasts, pot smoking and Frampton Comes Alive. Set on the last day of the academic year, the film follows the random activities of a sprawling group of Texas high schoolers as they celebrate the arrival of summer, their paths variously intersecting at a freshman hazing, a local pool parlor and finally at a keg party. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Dazed and Confused is a coming of age story that is written and directed by Richard Linklater. The film, while released in 1993, takes place at the end of the school year in 1976. The film is decent and with some good laughs and a nice coming-of-age story about going into your freshmen year of high school and entering into your senior year also. The film is regarded as a teen classic and is so; however, it does not live up to a lot of Linklater's later work (for example: the Before Sunrise Trilogy). It is a tad overrated but is fun to watch in 2014 due to performances from actor's early on in their careers, such as Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey. Overall decent watch and the bluray is of great quality.

The transfer was supervised by director Richard Linklater and cinematographer Lee Daniel for this outstanding Criterion release. The picture quality displays depth and excellent detail and partners with firm audio making for a nice experience. Dazed And Confused is fun and considered one of the better growing pain-based films in all of cinema. I definitely agree with this and I would go as far as saying it's better than Fast Times At Ridgemont High and The Breakfast Club. It truly embodies the 1970s and presents a hilarious perspective. Note: Ben Affleck, Parker Posey and Matthew McConaughey were featured in Dazed And Confused.

The picture and audio quality of this Criterion blu-ray release isn't much different from the (cheaper) Universal blu-ray. But, Criterion's release far surpasses Universal's release because of Criterion's supplements. Universal's release only has a few deleted scenes, and some retro public service announcements. Meanwhile, Criterion presents almost three hours of documentaries and interviews, more deleted scenes than Universal's release, a director commentary track, and a thick booklet containing essays from film critics and additional materials. The Criterion release is definitely the way to go!

This movie is set in Austin, Texas back in the 1970's on the last day of school for a group of students. What ensues for the group is a non-stop day full of comedic situations that will have you laughing and wishing that your school's last day was filled with so much fun. Although you will be laughing throughout the entire film, a lot of the comedic portion of the film comes with the struggles that the every day teenager must struggle with, such as drugs, alcohol, partying, hazing, etc. So, sit back and get ready to enjoy a film full of laughs! Alright, alright, alright!

This is a really fun film that depicts what it would have been like to be in high school circa 1975. The entire film takes place over the course of just one night. You'll notice a lot of stars when they were a lot younger. Enjoy the killer soundtrack as well. The blu-ray looks great. However, there aren't many extras to talk about here. Was kinda hoping for a director's commentary, but there is none. Fun blu-ray to watch when you want to be transported back in time.

Affleck was a good antagonist in this movie and McConaughey like most all others were enjoyable to watch. The senior initiations to high school for the graduating junior high school kids in this was a bit rough but at times humorous. Glad I never received such treatment going into my local high school! The music in this was fantastic bringing back fond memories of the days when people were more care-free vs. tight and worried like we are today.

A great movie that most 30 to 40 somethings can relate to on many levels. We all can relate to the end of the school year and summertime fun and cruising around and partying and the priority of getting ready for the next big concert to hit town. And than the sheer terror of being a freshman and doing whatever it took to not fall victim to upper class men making summer miserable

    Not All That Great

Other than an exceptional performance by Matthew McConaughey, I really don't have a whole lot of great things to say about this film. It's not bad, and some sequences are quite humorous, but the movie is just too inconsistent in my opinion. A good period piece though. Die hard fans may want to opt for the loaded 'Criterion' edition that is more expensive, but loaded with bonus material not seen here.
