    Synopsis

"Welcome to Deadwood...a hell of a place to make your fortune." These are the words that serve as greeting for saddle-weary former lawman Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) as he rides into the illegal Dakota Territory settlement of Deadwood, a scant few weeks after Custer's defeat at the Little Big Horn. Before long, Bullock makes the acquaintance of another displaced Westerner, the cynical, burnt-out gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine) -- and not long after that, both men have had their first run-in with town boss Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), the confident, corrupt owner of the Gem Saloon (an establishment largely populated by flint-hearted whores). Thus begins season one of the iconoclastic HBO Western series Deadwood, arguably the most realistic program of its kind ever seen on American television. In the 11 episodes that follow the season opener, a group of vicious outlaws tries to foment another Indian war; Swearengen's status as the lord of the flies on the Deadwood dungheap is challenged by a Chicago "syndicate" (yes, they had them as far back as 1876); a valuable land claim held by feisty, wealthy frontierswoman Alma Garret (Molly Parker) becomes the focus of a deadly serious power struggle; the notorious Black Jack McCall (Garret Dillahunt) kills Hickok during a poker game (quite a jolt, to knock off one of the series' main characters so early in the game!); Deadwood is ravaged by an epidemic, during which the rambunctious but compassionate Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert) becomes a legend; Bullock is marked for death after bringing a murderer to heel; Swearengen is double-crossed by duplicitous "working girl" Trixie (Paula Malcomson); the town's criminal element tries to block annexation of the Dakotas, which would bring much-despised law and order to the territory; a minister finds himself less welcome in town than an opium dealer; and at season's end, Seth Bullock becomes Deadwood's official sheriff -- a position that offers neither job security nor much chance for survival. ~ Hal Erickson

Deadwood is one of the best shows that HBO has ever produced, and easily one of the best shows ever created, in my opinion. The story of the outlaw town on South Dakota (North? I can't remember) is so full of rich and interesting characters, some of which existed in real like (Calamity Jane, Wild Bill, Al Swearengen) and certainly others who didn't exist, but who are really interesting and compelling characters, nonetheless. Highly recommended, and on Blu-ray if possible. The features included are fantastic!

Wow, this show was absolutely phenomenal! I couldn't believe I missed this one with all of the other great shows on HBO that I watch. For those who enjoy great acting, superb dialog, and history will love this! Deadwood takes a completely different spin on your typical western flick, those that enjoy westerns will not be disappointed with Deadwood, it's a must see.

If you have never seen this series and you are not offended by a little nudity and some cursing, you will love this "Deadwood" story. Even though I saw every one of these episodes when aired by HBO, I still was so captivated when watching the DVD's. You won't want to stop watching, you'll say to yourself "I'll just watch the next one to see what happens next" and the next thing you'll know the sun"s coming up because you watched them all night!!

Deadwood is one my most favorite TV shows of all time, and it's a shame it ended at 3 seasons. I wish I could relive the moments when I first binge watched Deadwood. It's up there with The Wire, Breaking Bad, and The Shield. It comes in excellent packaging, too! I don't know what else to write about this excellent show. Once in a while, you can get this on sale! I got this for about $55 here at Best Buy.

I got this whole series for a great price around the holidays. I have never watched Deadwood before, I am hooked after the first four episodes. I have to wait until late at night to watch it after the kids fall asleep because of the language and violence. The packaging of the set itself is very nice, and the picture looks great on Blu Ray. Also, many extras are included. It will probably take me about a year to watch all 36 episodes, i will enjoy the ride!

This is a masterpiece. It's tough, gritty, and not for the faint of heart. Surely this is how it must have been. Its well acted beautifully photographed and is a must have for lovers of westerns. If you don't have this one for your Blu-Ray collection you are missing a great series

This show is awesome, realistic, dark and actually pretty funny. It is not for the timid though, It's too bad HBO pulled the plug on this and did not let them complete the story.

Deadwood is a period piece with great potential. For those of you out there who like these types of series. It would be a good piece for you to have in your collection.
