The app is not necessary to use bluetooth with the speaker however in the initial setup the app is necessary in order to setup the speaker.

Q: I need to know how can I Use "ALEXA" on this speaker?
A: The set-up is pretty easy for HEOS and Alexa. You need to have the HEOS app downloaded and speakers set-up along with the Alexa app on your phone. Go to your Alexa app, then to skills section in the Alexa app, search for HEOS, enable HEOS as an Alexa skill, the Alexa app will ask for your account and login information, set-up will take about 20 seconds and you are ready to go.
Q: Is ALEXA built in on this speaker?
A: No. It is just a speaker. With HEOS, you can use Alexa to change music on it. You must have a separate Amazon device.
