The most important thing with headphones is obviously the sound and these sound great. Denon's 50mm Free Edge Nano Fiber Driver really crank out the highs and lows. You seriously are not going to find a better pair of cans at this price.
I have purchased several Sennheiser headphones over the years and I can definitely say that I prefer the way that Denon sounds. My only draw back is that I don't like the way they fit. To me at least the Sennheiser are more comfortable as they fit a little more snug around the ears (which I like). Obviously every bodies head is differently shaped so this might not even be an issue for you.
Still even with a very minor complaint I love these and am very happy with my purchase.

These headphones are absolutely top notch in build quality and sound fidelity. They are very large, so I do not find them particularly useful for travel or moving around, however, they are perfect for sitting at your desk or laying back in your arm chair if your goal is to get the best sound possible at a reasonable price (as in, under $1000). The headphones particularly shine in the comfort department. They cover my ears completely and without pinching, even after hours of use. The materials and build are high quality and you can feel that in the way the grip your head/ears. The included connections are of very high quality and come with several options including in line volume controls and an extra long cord for connection to a stereo moderately away from your seat. Overall a fantastic audiophile-focused product.

Compete with professional headphones over $1000

It's amazing, powerful, and compete with professional headphone over $1000,
But I wished Denon was more careful about its size.
It's big and bulky and It doesn't have enough grip on small heads!
It's my best purchase in 2012 (spent 6k on electronics)

Best Headphones I've Ever Owned

These are a truly excellent set of headphones.
For purposes of this review, I've included links to items I've referenced here for ease of use. I've used Best Buy links when possible.
I own a plethora of headphones (Beats Studio Pro (http://tinyurl.com/pheoobn) and V-Moda (hhttp://tinyurl.com/nnku3pe)) as well as high end gaming headsets (Razer Tiamat 7.1(http://tinyurl.com/k624r87) and Razer Blackshark (http://tinyurl.com/nm55mxt) and this beast beats all of them.
My goal, when buying this these headphones was the 'one ring to rule them all' school of thought, where I get one set of cans that could really do both. I was not disappointed.
Out the box, these things are great. Excellent build quality and extremely easy to use. Comes with a carrying case (that doesn't happen as much as you think) as well as two set of lines, one with a mic (for smartphones) and one that is thicker for music (etc).
For my music set up I've got a Onkyo Receiver (http://tinyurl.com/qe6dqz3) that use for music and movies (predominately). Hooking this bad boy up was a snap (with included studio-plug adapter, also not always included in a high end set) and everything sounded great. I listen to mostly Rap/RB/Rock and my movies tend to be a mixture of dialogue heavy documentaries and explosion ridden superhero movies. These's Denon succeeded where the Beats and V-Modas failed, namely in having enough low end to really feel great (sorry, V-Moda) but not so much that it drowned out nearly everything else (looking at you Beats!).
I also use this same headset for Computer Gaming and Skype. My gaming set-up entails using an optical plug into a FiiO E-17 Amp (http://tinyurl.com/mhpgr3s), an absolutely awesome portable amplifier that's superior to the Mix Amp from Astro. The Denon's handle audio blitzkrieg of computer like a champ, whether I'm playing something as crazy as Titanfall or as subtle as Dragon Age. For Skype, these cans are magical and I get crystal clear reception for calls. I use a separate mic, from Zalman (http://tinyurl.com/leoeleu) for computer applications and I find it superior to the mic usually attached to higher end headsets.
I'm not sure if they are actively noise cancelling, but I can't hear a thing when they are running (I have a 3 and 5 yr old, so that can be a good thing at times).
Absolutely Awesome set of Headphones that I cannot recommend highly enough!
However . . .
Two quick notes to consider.
1. The speaker line/plugs included would NOT work with my Windows Phone input at all (for some reason). This was not my primary phone, so this incompatibility was not a deal breaker but it is something to consider. Worked great with my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and my iPad, so there's that.
2. The cans themselves are not that large, think Beats, though they more closely resemble the Samsung Level's look, but there is a LOT of give in the headband. I have a GIGANTIC head and HATE vice like grips of certain headphones (That's you, Beats!) so this is awesome for me. If you have a TINY head or prefer you brains to be squeezed out of your ears, these may not be the ones for you.

I got item on sale but for my use it was a little too pricey for what I got. To use with my sound systems the cord I needed was just too much of a hassle. That may not be a problem for you. I'm a real value nut so maybe you wouldn't think it was too much money.
