Genre: Action, Fantasy, Comedy Length: 11 episodes "Illyasviel von Einzbern's normal life is suddenly halted by the Kaleidostick Ruby, a magical wand on the run from her former master, who instantly decides that little Illya has all the right stuff to become the next great magical girl. However, Ruby's previous owner Rin Tohsaka isn't exactly thrilled to be de-wanded, especially since she's just accepted an assignment to collect the seven legendary Class Cards. It seems the only solution is for Illya to take up the task and learn the ropes under Rin's supervision. Meanwhile, a girl named Miyu has been chosen by the Kaleidostick Sapphire as HER new master, much to the irritation of Sapphire's previous master, Rin's arch rival Luviagelita Edelfelt! Exactly what kind of plan are the wands conjuring up? Find out as the Fate/stay night universe "kaleids" with a healthy dose of magical girl mayhem in Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya!" This was definitely a fun series to watch. I streamed the first 4 episodes as they were airing back in 2013. If I had stuck with it one more week, it would have been amazing because episode 5 really kicks this series into high gear. I highly recommend watching the Fate/stay Night, Fate/zero series if you haven't, but they aren't entirely necessary for this series as it does branch off a lot from them. The story does a wonderful job in building up on multiple ideas and giving us more to look forward to as season 2 just finished airing. The Class Cards obviously hold a lot more meaning than what they've been told. What is the story behind Miyu that we only get to briefly see? And who is this mysterious man that is arriving in Japan? Lots of stuff to look forward to with season 2. Even if the story doesn't thrill you to the max, the animation definitely will. TYPE-MOON has always churned out fantastic works and this one is no exception. The backgrounds are never stale and rehashed except for a few classroom scenes. Movement is smooth and fluid. And the fighting scenes are absolutely amazing. The fight with Caster starts everything off, but those against Alter-Saber and Berserker really take the cake. Love it! I couldn't really handle the English dub-work on this one as it didn't seem like Illya's or Miyu's VA could get the right range without going into a whisper. Not an easy task to pull off for anyone, but the Japanese seem to have it down to an art. Shiro's character sounded more like a high-schooler or university student instead of a middle schooler as well. Don't expect much from the extras either. 4 promos and textless songs is all that you get. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I was a bit uncomfortable with the fanservice of Illy and Miyu, but that's used more for comedy as it seems Illya has a bit of a pervy streak in her! Illya's mom, though? Yes, please! Those are a far, distant second compared to the action scenes. I can't recommend this one enough.
