This is an absolutely fantastic piece of equipment. I switched from a Nikon D750 with a 50mm f/1.8, 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8. I switched to the Fujifilm X-T2 with two prime lenses, the 23mm f/2 (35mm equivalent) and the 56mm f/1.2 (85mm equivalent). I was quite nervous at first, very unsure, but after months with this setup, I've not regretted it one bit. I have plenty of reasons for this, and I will try to lay them out:
For starters, I wanted a camera that's lower in cost (this, of course, is relative) but that has top-notch image quality. If I'm spending the money, I want to know I'm paying for something worthwhile. I refuse to pay $500-$1000 for something mediocre that I'm going to upgrade next year and spend another $1000 or more or not be satisfied with the images. Defeats the idea. I want something that lets me pull up the shadows a ton, maintaining details and that has great dynamic range. This limits my options to newer cameras, and middle of the line or better.
The Nikon D600/D610, D750, and the Fujifilm X-T2 that I've had are all top of the line for this. Canon has a few good options, but I don't care for their sensors and physical layout. Even something as simple as grabbing the camera with my right hand and needing to use my left hand to turn it on. Never made sense to me. But these cameras that I've had are "ISO-less" and that's a huge deal for me. It's completely personal preference but it was very important to me.
I need something compact, light and easy to reach the buttons. If it's too heavy, I won't take it out. If the buttons aren't easy to reach and/or the menu systems are too complicated, I won't use it. It need something that truly inspires me to shoot, not something that makes my life any harder. Something that is a tool, but also created with intention, with actual thought and is not just the next iteration of the same old gear that is only that way because "that's how things are done".
I love being able to preview the image before taking it. It was weird for me at first, but an EVF, which I initially hated, is the only thing I'll shoot with now. And that's just for the body. For the lenses, small, light and SHARP are my keys. These two lenses are beyond phenomenal. Better than anything else I've shot with.
I chose to stick with an APS-C sensor instead of full frame. There's literally no disadvantages anymore between my crop sensor and full frame. And I used to be all about the full frame (35mm equivalent) systems.
And then with that, my lenses are smaller and cheaper and sharper.
And so, for me, I was die-hard Nikon fan. But since I've gone with Fujifilm, I've learned to love the company. I like Sony and Nikon, but their tools just don't inspire me to photograph.
The other thing is that the way that the Bayer filter is laid out on the sensor, it allows me to have much better color rendition, especially with skin tones. And the JPEGs straight out of camera cannot be beat. They are number one. Check the forums if you don't believe me. So if you want great images straightaway, that's the one to get.
And they have a few models to choose from, whether you want a street-photographer's all-around great camera (X100F), a more classic camera (X-Pro 2) or this which is an amazing balance of both (X-T2), those are the best of the best. And then for a more beginner, with the same sensor but a slightly different layout, the X-T20 is a great option, and a bit less money.
