Synopsis

The Golden Girls begins its fifth season minus several of its longtime writers, but with the basic cast intact: Bea Arthur as Dorothy, Betty White as Rose, Rue McClanahan as Blanche, and Estelle Getty as Dorothy's mom, Sophia, four very mature ladies living under the same roof in a small Miami neighborhood. The season opens with the two-part "Sick and Tired," another crossover episode featuring characters from the Golden Girls spin-off series Empty Nest, in this case Richard Mulligan as Dr. Harry Weston and Park Overall as Laverne Todd. The later episode "Not Another Monday" marks the second appearance of Blanche's daughter Rebecca, here played by Debra Engle, replacing the previous season's Shawn Schepps. "Dancing in the Dark" introduces Harold Gould in the recurring role of Rose's boyfriend Miles Webber, a shy, retiring type who will later turn out to have a most turbulent "secret life." In "Ebb Tide," Sheree North makes the second of two appearances as Blanche's spoiled younger sister Virginia. And in the two-part finale, the girls somewhat incredibly prepare for a visit from the first President George Bush -- who, of course, does not appear on-camera, but is represented by an offscreen voice provided by master mimic Harry Shearer. As in its fourth season, Golden Girls ranked as America's sixth most popular series throughout its fifth year on the air. ~ Hal Erickson

The golden girls are the best! It does not matter what age group u r (except little children) you will laugh and the best part is that there always seems to have a moral issue and also educational value. I have been watching the Golden Girls since my late 30's and this year I turned 60 and they are just as great now as they were then. When the Golden Girls first came out my sister who is 3 years older would go to my Mom's house, and myself and the 3 of us would make a day of it, with the highlight being the Golden Girls. That show brought us together once a week for over 3 years and then my sister moved out of state. We still all watched but had to phone each other afterword. You can't go wrong with this series. Feeling blue, sad, mad, blah, depressed or just not sure what to do or watch---Golden Girls is the perfect pick me up!

    The GIRLS Rule!

The Golden Girls is one of my all time fave shows. I've seen every episode at least 50 times & it never gets old (& neither do the Girls for they will remain forever timeless to me!) So when Best Buy had 6 out of 7 volumes on sale for $11.99 I just had to jump at the chance! Too bad Vol 4 was on backorder I'd have bought that too! On the discs be prepared for scenes cut from regular commercial-ridden TV. You'll have a blast figuring out which scenes they cut. Anyway thanx Best Buy for giving my my best B-day gift. The gift of the GIRLS! God rest 3 out of 4.

This show, although I could recite the dialogue by heart because I've seen these episodes so many times, still makes me smile. I wish there was a Golden Girls, 'the next generation,' because I thoroughly enjoyed this series and it would be neat to see what these characters would have gotten in to 30 years later ;)

Absolutely love this dvd set! Golden Girls is one of my favorite shows - season five in particular is a great season with stand out episodes like Mary Had a Little Lamb, Clinton Avenue Memories and Sick and Tired. Wish they had taken time to enhance the video footage, but still a great set to own.

My wife and I already had the first four seasons of the series in our video library. It only stood to reason to continue our collection. What better way to do that than as a birthday present. Golden Girls was classic television at its best.
