In seeing this film again after so many years, I had forgotten how much humor is mixed with the drama. Given changes in this society, some elements of this film are dated -- but the basic conundrum of coping with our prejudices (especially when we think we are not prejudiced) is an ever-present reality. To my mind, the film is weakened by the speed of the engagement of this couple. Quite apart from the racial differences, the suddenness in itself would make parents uncomfortable. So while flawed, this film still offers both entertainment and food for thought.

Watching this film was a training tool for beginning actors. From both a production and a performance standpoint, the film was excellent. The subject matter also provided an opportunity to discuss social issues of the day. Highly recommend!

This is Spencer Tracy's last movie. Tracy, Hepburn, Poitier and a solid cast play this movie with a taboo subject matter at the height of the civil rights movement. Tracy's speech at the end is just priceless on film and timeless in reality.
