I have been testing out the HP OMEN 16 for a few days now, and overall, I’m happy with it. The new HP Omen has a lot to offer but could use some improvements in other areas. So, let’s go over what the HP Omen has to offer. Setup and Unboxing: H: 0.94 Inches, W: 14.07 Inches, D: 10.59 Inches and Weight: 5.36 pounds. Right out of the box, the laptop has a nice hefty feel coming in at about 5.5 pounds, a little heavy but that is to be expected of a 16 Inch gaming laptop. It features a modern look, without being too flashy. On the inside, the laptop features a full keyboard with customizable lighting and decent sized and very responsive touchpad. The laptop also offers a front-facing 1080p camera with a built-in microphone. The laptop comes with a 230W charging brick, which is about the size of an actual brick, just thinner. Regarding setup, there is nothing special about it, just your normal windows setup which feels like it takes forever with any laptop. Display: The HP Omen is equipped with a 2K IPS LED display, offering a native resolution of 1920 x 1200. This screen provides sharp visuals and vibrant colors, making it suitable for gaming and creative work alike. With a 144Hz refresh rate, I experienced smooth motion, which is especially beneficial for fast-paced gaming. The display also incorporates anti-glare coating, which helps reduce reflections in bright environments. One thing I noticed is that the brightness output on this laptop is kind of low coming in at about 300 nits, which does make the display output seem a little dim, but not terrible. Powering the display is the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 with 8 GB DDR7 ram. Yes, that is the base model, but that is to be expected from a mid-range laptop. The 5060 helps provide great visuals for 1080p gaming but can be limited in more demanding games at higher resolution. Overall, the laptop does the job of providing entertainment that looks and feels good, whether it is watching a movie or playing your favorite games. Under the hood: The new Omen is powered by Intel Core Ultra 7 with AI Boost, paired up with 16 GB of DDR5 SDRAM. The laptop feels snappy, and it seems smarter about power usage when I’m not gaming. I can have multiple apps open at once and it doesn’t flinch. The processor features 16 core Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processor with a boost up to 5.1Ghz. The 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD combination keeps everything running quickly, and I haven’t run into any lag or long load times yet. One great thing about this laptop is that it is easily upgradable. The motherboard has an open slot for an extra SSD and upgradable RAM, so if you’re not happy with the speeds and storage, just upgrade. On a side note, this laptop does run a little hot at extended use, but that can be controlled by manually controlling the fans from the Omen application. Setting the fans to the Max setting does cool it down, but it does get a little noisy, If not using headphones. Battery: This is where this laptop does not shine at all. Let me just say this, if you are going to be gaming on this laptop, which is its intended purpose, make sure you have your charger with you. Battery life is fine for light work, but gaming on battery drains it fast. I usually keep it plugged in when I play. It stated that this laptop should provide up to 7 hours but realistically you are looking at about 5 hours. Ports: This is where this laptop just takes the cake. This laptop offers port galore for your entertainment. You have the following options at your disposal. 1 – HDMI 2.1 1 – USB C 3.2 1 – USB A 3.2 2 – USB A 3.1 Audio Jack Ethernet Port / WIFI 6e The only port that is missing is a display port, which again is not a big deal. Conclusion: All in all, this laptop provides strong value with solid performance for gaming and creative tasks. It's reliable, enjoyable, and a good choice for those seeking balanced performance without a high price.

After unboxing, first impression is of excellent construction, and quite heavy. The case appears to be all plastic. However, some online info states the chassis is sheet metal covered with plastic, and seems solid. I did notice the lid hinges are quite stiff, however there was some “wobble” or flex, without actually moving the screen. The bottom cooling intake vents have a mesh over them, which should keep the inside fairly clean. Around the sides and back there were numerous ports, including one USB-C, one USB-A 3.2, two USB-A 3.1, an HDMI port, LAN port, headphone jack, and power. Sadly lacking, there is neither an SD, or micro SD card slot. Some of the specs are impressive. One TB SSD, 16Gb DDR5 ram, a 16 core Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processor with a boost up to 5.1 Ghz. A screen with 1920 X 1200 resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. An Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 with 8Gb - should slice through top tier games easily. There are a few things that underwhelm..... Mainly the screen - with a rated brightness of only 300 nits, a color gamut of only 62.5, and no touch. I did manage to get a good color balance using advanced color settings in control panel, but still didn't have the best dynamic range. However, once colors settings were tweaked, the screen looked good for movies, videos etc. When gaming, the 1920 x 1200 resolution, the 144Hz refresh rate made for sharp, smooth game experience, with good color. Sound through the speakers was good for a laptop, using headphones is always a good option. Do not expect phenomenal battery life. I did setup, installation of apps, downloaded and installed updates etc., and at 3 ½ hours, battery had dropped to 38%. I would expect 4 ½ to 5 hours with every day tasks, and maybe as little as 2 hours if gaming and working the video card. I found the keyboard to have good feel and travel, but some of the key markings are tiny, and a few look similar – the D, O, and 0, while the period and comma are almost invisible. The touch pad is large and responds well, but is shifted to the left due to the addition of the number pad. Key back lighting can be customized and is RGB. Doing usual browsing, emails, downloading, updating, etc., this machine didn't slow down a bit even while multi-tasking. On to trying a game. I used an older game “God Of War” from Steam library, and the performance was excellent. The game ran at 85 to 140 Fps, was extremely smooth and fluid at high settings. Again, sound was adequate, nothing spectacular. Using wired or 2.4Ghz wireless headphones will bring it alive..... While gaming, the fans kicked into high gear, and did have a noticeable sound level. Overall, this is a good gaming / “everyday” large screen laptop, and should meet the needs of all but the most demanding gamers. I recommend at this price point for a solid performer.
