About a year ago, I bought a different HDMI > VGA adapter to connect my laptop to an older presentation projector, but made the mistake of getting one without a separate audio-out jack. So, the video that was the central point of my presentation played on the big screen...but without sound. Chalk it up to user-error...I didn't realize that the HDMI adapter I bought would render the audio/headphone jack on my laptop useless. Live and learn, I guess.
I bought this adapter because I needed a way to connect a DVD player to a projector for a backyard "theater." Before I did, I made sure to find one that separated the audio from the HDMI output, allowing me to plug the audio into an amplifier so everyone could hear the action. If you're looking for an easy way to connect a newer video component to an older playback display, this is a great option. The only reason I gave it a 4-star review is the cost. It seems a little pricey for what it does. In the end, though I'm glad I have it.
