I've been playing madden since the beginning and I've skipped a few here and there thanks to rival games of the time or what have you(NFL 2K5 anyone?) Anyways, I got an email from Sony about my year in review and it said I played 142 hours of madden 18, and I've only had it since November. So apparently it's good, but why? Usually I'm a franchise player but this year's mode just didn't grab me like ultimate team did, I'd say of the 142 hours of madden 18, 120 of those hours were in MUT. Probably more to be honest. The reason I found MUT to be so enjoyable was the way progress was made, it felt like I could build a team without spending money and it wasn't a grind. Plus, the time spent playing the game was spent doing challenges instead of endless 3 minute quarter games. An example would be, you are down by 4 with 3 minutes left on the 50 yard line and you can only run the ball to win. These kept me coming back because I didn't have to commit to a 15 to 20 minute game. Another cool thing is the NFL legends in this mode. As far as graphics, the game looks beautiful with the new engine. Helmets shimmer in the sun, player faces look pretty accurate and the stadiums are stunning Gameplay is better than 16 for sure, but I never played 17 so I can't comment on that one. You can run the ball in a more realistic manner. Passing isn't as bad as 15. Commentary is fresh wirh weekly updates. What isn't good? The amount of weird fumbles, lack of realistic injuries, lack of franchise mode freshness and some odd crashes makes this a 4 star game. I'd rather play madden 07 for franchise. Mode Or NFL 2K5. Bottom line, if you want an addictive game of MUT with some very cool timed challenges(I do mean some sweet challenges too), pick it up for sure. However, if you want a franchise experience you can sink your teeth into, grab a retro console and get an older game of football. 8.1/10.

Madden usually always has several annoying aspects and if 2k came back i would stop buying madden in a heart beat but this year it's just terrible. I swear if they would just focus on fixing the glitches and refine the game it would be great and I though frostbite might give that a shot but I was wrong. Its clear they spent way more time on the new longshot feature then actually refining the game. The physics of the game are terrible. Players will bump into one another and go flying or stand up and flip another player a few feet in the air. Running backs have no sense of balance, will go flying if your own teammate bumps into you, and players like gurley and DJ get brought down easily by arm tackles from corners. You would imagine players like John Ross and Tyreek Hill would be able to outrun linebackers but they get chased down on a regular basis from behind. AI seems to make no logical decisions. I ran a QB sneak on 4th and inches and the QB for some reason kept his arm with the ball back behind the first down line as running into his own center knocked him down with about 4 yds of open space in front of him. Same issue as always the half back dump off routinely results in them continuing to run out of bounds even with an open field in front of them or making a tip toe catch on the sideline behind the line of scrimmage for no reason. I could probably go on for hours but you catch my drift. I buy it only because i love football but its a sad excuse for a game in all honesty.

Madden NFL 18 makes the move to the Frostbite engine and the graphics are better for it. While some of the colors do not pop as much as the did on the Ignite graphics engine, Frostbite brings over raw power to the proceedings with improved stadium and player detail. The big addition is Longshot, a standalone story experience similar to FIFA 17's story mode. Longshot tells an interesting story and the characters are great. It does suffer a little bit from the illusion of choice where there really is none, but most people only play the mode once anyway, so never really notice. The weak shot this year is Franchise mode. It is basically unchanged from Madden 17's. There is a few little touches like preseason cuts and playing time improvements, a draft board, etc., but not enough to make much of a difference. Having said that, the mode is fairly deep and not bad to begin with, so don't let the lack of progress stop you from buying a copy. The on field action did see a noticeable improvement. Running backs do a much better job of getting skinny running through the line, so there is less getting hung up on linemen. The passing game improved too, with more variation between quarterbacks. The last big improvement is defensive, with much more realistic interceptions and dropped opportunities. Throw a dumb pass into coverage and watch it get picked off. Overall, Madden 18 is worth a look and probably a purchase for most fans.

Are you desperate for more realistic shadows and overall better looking aesthetics and a roster update? If yes then you can probably be forgiven for shelling out 60 for the game. I'll preface by stating I've never been an online player in any way, so this could definitely void the review for some which is understandable. Now on to my review of Single player career...it's the same, almost literally the same. I don't care about MUT. I don't care about your ham handed soap opera. I want to move a team and design every aspect of the move I want to design a stadium. I want chemistry to effect team play. The draft is still good but you nailed that last year. We do this song and dance every year. Little by little you add features that were in previous seasons iterations and by the end of a console's life cycle it's a fully fleshed out game. Meanwhile, on the new console it's like a demo offered at full price with slightly better graphics. I've bought the last 3 copies of Madden consecutively and I'm going to have to take pause before I buy another, some changes need to be addressed with Career Mode because it's becoming fairly stagnant at this point.

If you like Madden, then you'll like this game. The game improves every year, but I can't honestly say if it's something that if you are not a hardcore Madden fan needs to be upgraded every year. I'm not one of those fans, but yet I seem to upgrade anyways. Why? I don't want to be left out of seeing that's been updated from last season's game to the next. Thing is, we don't really utilize the MUT feature of the game, nor do we play people online. My son and I either play our own franchise seasons or play head-to-head. I have no real desire to play online versus others, but my son (he's ten) would love to. Problem is, with this being an EA game, the system won't allow him to play, even if I as his father say it's okay to. I appreciate EA's efforts to protect kids from the dangers of online predators or language/behavior they would be subject to by playing online games, but I feel that should be each parent's decision. This is why I only give the game 4-stars. It's too bad, that unless his friends' parents as well as myself create user accounts with false information that my son and his friends cannot play each other online in Madden.

lately the only thing that is different in madden is the cover athlete and the players on the team. Outside of that there is really no difference from last years game. This year it does add the story mode that was a nice touch but I would have like to see it play out no matter what choices you make. For instance if you do not make the throw you just go back and try it over and over again until you do. Maybe if they bring back the training camp that we use to have and the all-time great teams like in the early days that would be a good addition. You could play the 85 bears against the 2016 patriots. Or how about playing in RFK with the Joe Gibbs skins against Dak and the new look cowboys.this would bring a little something to franchise that is in need of a change. Honestly if it was not on sale when I purchased it I might not have purchased this one. This maybe the last madden I ever purchase.

I upgraded from Madden 16 which my son and I love to play together. The graphics and updated rosters are excellent but one thing we didn’t like is even on the easy arcade mode the game seemed to get a bit more complicated. For example you have to make receivers run the routes for the play accurately or else the throw won’t even be close. My son loved being the receiver in the last game and just tapping the buttons to catch the ball and run after the catch. But now he has to run the route too which makes it more difficult. Also if playing with 2 players it’s a lot more difficult to see who the second player has selected on the field to control. This was more easily visible in Madden 16 with a red or blue shaded circle on the player but in 18 it’s just a small circle. These aren’t big things but enough so that my younger 7 year old son prefers to play the old 16 version instead.

I love Madden 18, and have no idea what these people are talking about with the rest of these reviews. The graphics are more crisp than they have ever been. The extra functionality on defense and offense is great. I love the fact that you can now skip things like timeout scenes, kickoff scenes, etc. It speeds up the game. MUT mode is much better with the new levels scheme, and I have no idea what all these people talking about that is "more expensive". In fact it is less expensive, they have better packs to buy with just coins. Meaning all you have to do is get coins to get some decent players. You don't have to pony up extra money, unless you just want to buy your way to a great team. There are also new stadiums, and new custom uniforms that are pretty sweet. Longshot mode is pretty weak, I have to admit. I wouldn't buy the game if you just wanted to play long shot mode. But, who wants to do that?
