    Synopsis

    Meatballs
Set at a low-end summer camp and aimed squarely at a teen audience, Meatballs is a light screwball comedy that turned its low-budget Canadian roots into a very profitable box-office run. The biggest reason for the film's success is Bill Murray who stars as Tripper, the head counselor who runs things at Camp Northstar with the help of his love interest Roxanne (Kate Lynch) and the camp's director Morty (Harvey Atkins), who is affectionately known as Mickey. Camp opens with Tripper and Morty preparing the misfit counselors-in-training -- Spaz, Fink, Crockett, A.L., Candace, Wendy, and Wheels among them -- for the arrival of their hyperactive little charges. After settling in, kids and counselors begin their activities with a soccer game in which depressed 11-year-old Rudy (Chris Makepeace) accidentally loses the game. Cast out by the other children, Rudy runs away only to come across Tripper, who befriends the boy and makes him his running partner. Romance, sexy fun, and comic hijinx -- usually with the heavy-sleeping Morty as their target -- lead up to an annual Olympiad in which Camp Northstar battles the wealthier and athletically superior residents of Camp Mohawk. The challenging events include cup stacking, potato-sack racing, and a nauseating hot dog-eating contest in which the portly Fink devours his way to victory. With the two-day event tied up, it comes down to the cross-country run, in which Tripper enters Rudy. Meatballs was the first major directorial effort by multi-talented filmmaker Ivan Reitman, whose name has since become synonymous with the comedy genre. ~ Patrick Legare, Rovi

Superb Comedy that the Whole Family Can Enjoy

Like the other reviewers, I too remember watching this movie as a kid. When I found it had been released onto DVD, I was ecstatic and rightfully so. It's been over 19 years since this movie was first released and yet it still delivers the laughs every time. Unlike other comedies, this movie never moves into the raunchy and crude humor so often seen today. It is rated PG and the description says there is brief nudity, although I can't think of a single scene that fits that description. My 8 year old will probably have a hard time with it when (eeewww!) the boys kiss the girls, but the rest will be great! Bill Murray's talent shines through on this, his first starring role in a movie. The extras include the making of the movie with great tidbits you don't want to miss and audio commentary by Ivan Reitman and Dan Goldberg. It's interesting to note that while the movie was made in the late 1970's, it doesn't have that "period" feel to it. Clothing and hair styles today are mimicking the '70s styles so they fit right in. The beauty of summer camp is that it seems to be the same today as it did 20 years ago so it's easy to feel "nostalgic" with this movie while your kids are watching and laughing because what they're seeing is so true!

Another One I Liked As a Kid

'Meatballs' was a great movie to watch as a kid. The whole summer camp theme is just a blast, and Bill Murray is his usual great self. Now that I'm older, I don't quite think the movie is as fun to watch as it was when I was younger, but it still holds up and won't fail to entertain those who also enjoyed it back in the day. Recommended!

I had never seen this movie before purchasing the DVD from BestBuy.com. Really glad I purchased it... it was worth the money. My Husband also watched the movie with me... he enjoyed the movie too. I also have Meatballs II on DVD as well. Can't wait to watch that one too.

I used to watch this as a kid all the time. This movie brings back great memories and is still very fun to watch. The extras were pretty good, although it would've been nice to see Bill Murray in it. I definitely recommend picking it up!

Go back to summer camp with Bill Murray. Great soundtrack. Classic Bill Murray leads Camp North Star to victory over Camp Mohawk. Kids: Some language, innuendo.

Really a well made movie. Sure Bill murray carries it but that is what he does. Underrated comedy from back in the day.

This one could be a Bill Murray classic, it was one of his first movies and is loaded with lots of laughs.
