    Synopsis

    Moonraker
In this adaptation of Ian Fleming's 1955 novel, James Bond (Roger Moore) must thwart Sir Hugo Drax (Michel Lonsdale), who plans to wipe out all of humankind and replace it with a super race that he has cultivated in a massive space station. The film's Bond girl in the case is American secret agent Holly Goodhead, intelligently played by Lois Chiles. "Jaws," the steel-mouthed henchman played by Richard Kiel in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), makes a return appearance in Moonraker, turning good guy (complete with a girlfriend of his own) in the process. Bernard Lee makes his last appearance as "M" in what was up til this point, the most costly of James Bond's 1970s escapades. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

      BOND IN SPACE.......

For Your Eyes Only was the next movie in the series as mentioned in the credits for 1977's Spy Who Loved Me ( hopefully available sometime this year in Blu Ray) but with the success of Star Wars, the Bond producers said that we need to put Bond in Space.....In fact that was the tagline on one of the posters. This DVD release coincides with the 30th anniversary of the film that brought Moore back to the screen and his rival from Spy Who Loved Me, Richard Keil reprised his role as "Jaws" Why that movie wasn't released first????? The entire sequencing of releases boggles the mind but oh well.... The films plot was simple but still fun to see. New DVD features include more documentaries than were on previous releases and a remastered widescreen version of the trailer ( 2.35:1) as opposed to the previous 16 x 9 release. The only problem is that I have an old tape with all the Bond trailers through A View to A Kill and there was a different version of the trailer and I have never seen it again adn the tape I have is so old it is not watchable but I do remember an entirely different version, perhaps that was the teaser....anyway besides that, the extras are great, for what they are. The 1080P presentation is great and the sound is awesome and this is a great bond to hear in 5.1 ( 7.1 if you have it).

I admit, there's some REAL cheesy stuff that takes me out of this movie. However, other cast and moments kept me hooked. Lois Chiles is one of the best additions to Bond movies ever. The Rio setting and Jaws' "masquerade" moment was really creepy. I think this Bond movie may be the first where a minor female character actually gets rescued (spoiler, sorry - it's still suspenseful). More big set pieces that aren't to be missed and some really great stories on the extras. For me, when they all went to space, so did my interest, it just got too goofy, as well as Jaws romance. However, they did pave the way for Machete II, that's worth something.

I like the more modern Bond films as they start to add more cars and gadgets and become more action style films than just thriller spy movies. Now don't me wrong, I love all the older ones too for their stories and acting and I have all of them on BD and they've never looked better but I'm an action kind of guy, so I lean more towards the newer ones for that reason. MGM did a great job on all the films, picture quality, remastered sound, tons of extras, every one of them is worth owning so don't hesitate now, grab them while you can.

Agent 007 (Roger Moore) blasts into orbit in this action-packed adventure that takes him to Venice, Rio De Janeiro and outer space. When Bond investigates the hijacking of an American space shuttle, he and beautiful CIA agent Holly Goodhead (Lois Chiles) are soon locked in a life-or-death struggle against Hugo Drax (Michael Lonsdale), a power-mad industrialist whose horrific scheme may destroy all human life on earth!

This is an affordably priced blu-ray that has many special features on it. Definitely worth picking up for James Bond fans. Picture and audio look great. I won't spoil any plot points for those who haven't seen this movie but I will say this James Bond outing was an obvious attempt by MGM to cash in on the Star Wars craze that was in full swing back in the '70s.

Pretty bad reputation among Bond fans. There's no doubt at all that the movie was meant to cash in on the science fiction craze that was sweeping the world in the wake of Star Wars mania and the Bond producers obviously wanted a piece of that potentially lucrative pie. The results are pretty mixed, but as hokey as the film is, it isn't completely without merit or its own off-key charm

'Moonraker' was a cool concept for a 'James Bond' film, but it just doesn't quite match up in terms of quality when you compare it to many of the other, much better '007' pictures. Still, well worth it for fans of Ian Fleming's famed character. Die-hard fans will probably want to get the more expensive 2-disc special edition instead!
